Tournaments In The Old World

Old World Tournaments are popping up all over the place, and Tournament Organizers are trying to figure out the best way to set up their events. I talked to a few about their methods.

The Old World is a new game with some very old DNA. Very few ideas in the ruleset are truly new, but they have never been put together in this configuration before. Experienced Warhammer Fantasy players who try TOW for the first time will very likely find a lot of it familiar, while still being surprised once or twice by the interplay of some mechanics. This makes the job of a Tournament Organizer all the more important and difficult.

Players have been theorizing about how certain mechanics might break the game since before the rules were actually released. Linehammer was the biggest bugaboo, with players and influencers forecasting that enormous units deployed in single lines would dominate the game. Once the rules dropped other potential exploits presented themselves, such as hordes of individual dragon ogres and clouds of individual gyrocopters. Magic, magic items, and characters all offered their own game breaking possibilities. And yet not all possibilities will come to pass, and some that are unforeseen will likely arise.

What is the solution? Is there a solution? Might there be more than one? I spoke with three Tournament Organizers who all took a different approach for their separate tournaments. All are experienced players and TOs who bring their own unique perspective to the format. Over the next few days I will publish my conversations with them here. Stay tuned, I hope you find them as interesting as I did!

Gray was lucky (and old) enough to buy a box of RTB01 space marines new off the shelf and the rest is history. His passion for miniatures and game development has lead him into sales and production roles for tabletop companies, and on Quixotic personal ventures as well. He loves retro, historical and indie gaming, has a keenly honed sense of nostalgia for 40K and WFB, and loves to paint. Most of his gaming is done with his two sons who are just discovering the joys of the hobby, and the rest of his time is spent reading History, Fantasy and Sci-Fi, or painting minis and writing games for fun.
