Bolt Action 3rd Edition is coming in September! Let’s see what Warlord has to say about it so far.
Bolt Action 2nd Edition, a phenomenal game that has delighted WW2 wargames enthusiasts for the better part of a decade, has received its last army book and FAQ. Hot on the heels of the barn burner announcement of Epic Battles: Hail Caesar – The Punic Wars, Warlord games has announced that a new edition of their flagship game system has been in the works for some time and is slated for a September release! The system was developed by living hobby legends Rick Priestly and Alessio Cavatore. Here is what Cavatore has to say about the third edition:
“Working on this new edition of Bolt Action has been a treat, but also a challenge. I saw my mission as trying to make my favourite game an even better experience for the players. For me, there’s always one goal in mind – continuing my quest for a truly ‘seamless’ set of wargame rules – in other words, the Holy Grail of a rules system where the players are always thinking about their next moves on the table, and not about the rules of the game! I think Bolt Action: Third Edition is definitely a big step in that direction, and I’m sure you’ll agree with me!”
Warlord is being cagey with details so far, but they have promised a full showcase of the new system in July. For now, they have promised a recognizable system that keeps most core mechanics in tact, including pinning and BA’s unique dice-pull system for randomizing the turn order. In terms of changes, Warlord has said that army selection, unit profiles and point costs have been totally reworked. They assure veteran players that their existing armies are still valid, but they might want to retool them somewhat, due to the changes in points costs and unit rules.
Bolt Action is one of the most robust historical rulesets on the market currently. The gameplay is incredibly fun and highly tactical, while still being truly beginner friendly. It is easy to learn, hard to master, making it perfect for casual games and tournaments, of which there are many, held regularly across the world. It is a great historical gateway game, and I always suggest it to anyone who is feeling 40K or GW fatigue. Here’s hoping that the third edition builds on the excellent bones of 2nd edition and continues to build on the legacy of this wonderful system!
