Following hot on the heels of their last preview, GW has released images and details of more classic models that, well, look a bit better.
More classic miniatures are coming back to the tabletop! The Old World Almanack has shown off more revived Bretonnian and Tomb Kings minis and talked about about the process of bringing them back from the dead… or the storage cabinet. In the dark age of miniature making, before the advent of 3D design programs, miniatures were sculpted in putty and “Master Molds” were made from these “greens” (so called because they were often sculpted out of Green Stuff). The master molds would be used to make miniatures that could then be used to make other molds. In many cases, the original greens to not survive the casting process, at least not in one piece. If a green is gone, you only have the masters to make new molds. If you don’t have the masters either, then you are stuck with the molds you have.
GW apparently found itself in a variety of the above situations with regards to these old kits. They had some masters, but not all of them, so in some cases they were stuck trying to repair masters or molds by resculpting detail and embellishing where necessary. Apparently the above trebuchet needed quite a bit of work!
So which minis are we finally seeing? I spot a classic Screaming Skull Catapult, for one. Bone Giants are coming back, and this time they brought a proper helmet! I was never a fan of the “human torsos as headdress” option from the classic kit, and I have a soft spot for horse hair plumes, so this is definitely my favorite piece of news from this article. The Tomb Scorpion is back as well, now with ball joints for easier assembly. That sounds good, but I wonder if it will need to be pinned if it’s metal. Carrion are getting a third model, which promises to be as much of a pain to paint as the original two, but variation is nice!
And of course, the classic Ark of the Covenant… I mean, the Casket of Souls!
GW also teased *something* happening on Saturday, presumably not the release of The Old World itself, which is no secret. What do you think of these classics minis? Let us know in the comments!
