Hi all,
Now that it’s 2024, it’s time to review my predictions for 2023. Each year I come up with a new set of predictions for the coming year, let’s see what I got right and wrong!
2023 Predictions: 40K
40K: I am guessing it will be a quiet year for 40k in terms of codexes but busy in other ways
- There will be six arcs of omen books, the three already shown and then one for Snikrot, Farsight and Azrael. These books will come out once a month until July, leading to….
- 10th edition launches in July 2023. It will be more of a shake up than 8th-9th was. The biggest change comes to stratagems which are greatly curtailed if not fundamentally altered. 10th ed also will give players more freedom in detachment flexibility.
- 10th edition also radically alters the Crusade system simplifying it and causing some controversy in the narrative discussion boards.
- Including the full releases of the World Eaters and Guard the Space Marines, Tyranids and Orks all get new codexes.
- All in all, 40k will continue to be strong, but will start losing ground to 30k and other systems as it staggers under its own weight.
Summary:
Decidedly mixed here! There were only 5 Arks books, with Snikrot being the odd man out. I got the right faction for the Dark Angel Arks of Omen book, but missed the Lion. I feel pretty happy with my 10th ed predictions! The crusade predictions were a little off, I feel they were mostly similar between the editions, and the changes were not controversial. My predictions for SM and Nid codexes were spot on, but not Orks and Guard. 40K still seems to be in a decent spot though I feel it has struggled a bit after the 10th ed release. It’s all subjective but I feel people in my local area are a little burnt out right now.
2023 Predictions: Other Systems:
- 30k starts growing more rapidly as it takes on additional 40k players
- New releases include the Cerberus, recon marines and an White Scars Outrider Praetor
- Age of Sigmar continues to grow buoyed by a year of many releases.
- Seraphon, Cities of Sigmar, Maggotkin, Disciples of Tzeentch, Ossiarch Bonereapers, Flesh Eater Courts are the announced releases.
- However, GW will update all old Age of Sigmar Battletomes by the end of the year.
- There will be no concrete update on the Old World until December 2023 as GW focuses on the unexpected popularity of 30k.
Summary:
Let’s start with AoS I called the release of all the Battletomes in 2023, I feel that AoS has had a good year, strengthened by their best edition yet. There were some competitive hiccups with some poorly thought out rules *cough* Krondspire *cough* *cough*. But all things considered I am curious how 4th ed will change up the game this year.
Lots of 30k releases this year, though no Praetor or plastic recon marines. I am not sure how much 30K has grown, but there were a lot of players at Nova this year. I was only off by 2 months on my Old World news prediction, and I’ve never been to happy to be wrong. I didn’t see the Legions Imperialis release coming, not many did, and I have added it to the list of games I want to try out when I have time!
All in all, it’s been a great year to be a fan, and I am even more pumped for this coming year. I am already working on my next set of predictions for 2024, so keep your eyes peeled! What would you like to see in the coming year?
