Path to Glory Organizer Interview

Hi all,
The Path to Glory system has long intrigued me after its revamp for 3rd ed AoS. Sadly, it doesn’t appear to be widely adopted, either at narrative events or at the local level. Fortunately, our local club has started up a slow-growth Path to GLory campaign and i managed to corner the organizer for an interview. I hope this will prove inspiring to those of you thinking about starting your own campaign!

How long have you been playing Age of Sigmar? What armies do you collect?

Nate: I got into AoS around the same time I got into 40k. It was middle of 8th edition 40k, and the soul wars box set had just come out. So Second Edition I think? I read the Soul Wars novel and it kinda started me down the path. As for armies, Cities of Sigmar is my first love. And Kharadron Overlords. I also really enjoy the lore of Stormcast, and that is my only 2k army atm.

What made you want to start up a Path to Glory Campaign? Was it difficult to get people to join?

Nate: I am a narrative person at heart. I like lore in any medium. Games, movies, history etc. Coming from 9th edition crusade I figured Path to Glory could be just as fun. As for difficulty to join, it wasn’t too terrible I don’t think. I just mentioned doing it, and the AoS group said people had been interested previously, but no one ever organized and ran it. People generally seemed overall excited about it, and now we have about 12 to 15 people playing.

What is the narrative story you have your players participating in? Are you having weekend events? Or are players scheduling games on their own?

Nate: Our narrative takes place in Ghur, along the Excelsis Road to another small city called Izaleth. It focuses on warbands in the area attacking Dawnbringer crusades. Right now we “officially” have one game a month, and everyone gets a free 200 points per month. We play sunday mornings pretty early, but people are free to play as many games as they want for glory.

Have you encountered any difficulties? Has anything surprised you so far?

Nate: Nothing difficult yet other than me trying to make an interactive map and failing at it. As for surprises? I was just really surprised people were so interested. Even though AoS is a narrative game, a lot of people focus on the competitive side of things.

Are you implementing any custom rules or playing the game as it is out of the box?

Nate: As of right now, the only custom rule is a free 200 points per month. I haven’t had to tailor anything yet. But likely will have too when we get higher up in points. We started at 600.

What are your goals for this campaign? What impact do you think it will have on your local club? Do you have an advice for someone hoping to start their own Path to Glory campaign?

Nate: My goal is to have people think narratively about their armies, enjoy building, painting and playing and getting an army to 2k. Once we get to that part I’ll let the group decide if we keep the story going, or start a new PTG campaign. As for how it will impact the local club, I just hope it helps sell more models, gets more people into playing AoS and lets people enjoy themselves. As for people looking to start their own, the only advice I can give is to write something up narratively, and bounce ideas off of your player group. If enough take interest, run with it.
