Frontline Gaming Full Color Terrain Review – The Field Base

Hi all,
I have been intrigued by FLG’s full color terrain for a while now, and they were kind enough to send me a copy to review. I got the Field Base set a few weeks ago and finally was able to assemble it this past week. I did have some experience with other FLG terrain which was quite helpful through this process, but it’s not impossible for newbies.

Packaging:
All FLGterrain is flat packed, MDF which is what makes it so affordable. One issue I had was figuring out which package was which building, though I later found that there are codes printed on each sheet which can guide you.

Be aware that the terrain has a very strong smell when you open it, try to ventilate your assembly area before you get going. My glue also has a strong smell and I almost overwhelmed myself between the two of them.

Assembly:
FLG terrain often requires you to sub assemble the buildings before fitting them together. Many of the joints can be a bit loose, so I recommend building one building at time. This allows you to fit all the pieces together before the glues dries making for a crisper finish.

The assembly instructions are all online, but can be a bit difficult to navigate. Watch out for pieces that look similar but have small differences. One of the downsides of this terrain is that, since it is pre-painted, any glue stains will be harder to cover up. If you are a sloppy gluer, like myself, plan accordingly. Overall, I ranked the buildings in the set in terms of easiness to build:

End Result:
Overall I am quite happy with the results. It fits in well with the other FLG terrain I have, as well as the GW and 3rd party sets. I like how the bunkers open up, making them useful for a variety of scenarios. One amazing strength of this terrain is how quickly you can build up a board for a narrative or casual gaming. It takes me ages to get to painting my terrain sets, as they can be a slog. However, these kits help me keep my momentum up by only requiring assembly.

I am planning out a fortification heavy narrative mission, and this set gives you a lot of fantastic terrain. If you aren’t wild about how it looks you can easily flock the bases of the terrain or re-paint it yourself. I highly recommend you look into this terrain, or any of the non-pre-painted options as well. I have found FLG to be a great place to build a base of terrain, or get some great, themed pieces!
