Hi all,
I had the chance to chat with the organizer of the Squarehammer site in order to cover the Warhammer Armies Project tournament at the NOVA open. This was the first Warhammer Fantasy-related tournament at NOVA for years and an exciting return for an amazing game!
1. How did the event go overall? How many players came?
Sq: Splendid! It was my first Grand Tournament so I was somewhat anxious that it would run smoothly, which it did. We had 26 signups but only 22 show (fine by me because their fees still went towards prize support). Hopefully we’ll continue to grow.
2. Did the missions go smoothly? How did the scoring process work? Any favorite moments that you witnessed? (Funny or cool)
Sq: Missions were perfect to not only have the most op units on the field murdering entire armies; you were incentivized and rewarded for taking some chaff. Basically, you score by holding objectives each game turn (based on unit strength then core/special/rare had additional rules), then you got extra battle points for killing characters, capturing banners, general, and overall points slain – holding objectives were the primary source of points. Funny was hands down went multiple people were acting in character as their army – we had 5 players in costume – half naked slayer, empire state troop, wood elf druid, a bret knight, and an empire knight
3. Did you have any favorite conversions or armies present?
Sq: Favorite army had to be one of the beautiful empire armies, painted extremely well, or Peters that won best theme due to his well painted bretonnians + the display board (with the old castle) + him dressed up. Other than that, it’s also hard to beat Rusty’s 3rd edition khorne army
4. Are you thinking of running this event again? What changes are you thinking of for next year?
Sq: Oh 100% if NOVA will have me! Changes would be to refine the scoring layout + missions a little more, maybe change up the army restrictions (had to be set since I knew several players are more laid back so I wanted everyone to have a somewhat balanced opportunity list wise)
5. I am sure the Old World release is hovering in the background of everyone’s mind. If it does release next year, how will you determine which event to run?
Sq: Most definitely, I was even approached by a GW content coordinator and we spoke for a good 20 minutes about the event + the old world; very fun to do. I think it will mostly depend on the community and if we mostly agree that the old world feels like true fantasy. We all know the community will explode in size, which is what we are hoping for, but we also want it to be Fantasy Fantasy, not fantasy light if that makes sense.
