Epic Battlefields Await in Legions Imperialis: Terrain and Tactics

Legions Imperialis promises colossal battles set during the tumultuous Horus Heresy era, where tank squadrons clash with infantry companies, bomber wings darken the skies, and towering Titans march with malicious intent. To match this epic scale of warfare, you’ll need equally grand battlegrounds. We’ve already unveiled the terrain pieces joining the Legions Imperialis range, and their modularity adds to their allure. But how do these terrains impact your all-out conflicts? Let’s dive into the battlefield dynamics.

The Power of Terrain in Legions Imperialis

Parking your legions amidst terrain holds several advantages. It provides a shield against enemy assaults, as concrete walls and manufactorum pipes offer superior protection compared to the average trooper’s armor. Even scattered debris and craters offer a Cover Save, which is a unique save not influenced by a weapon’s Armour Penetration, making even the mightiest super lasers think twice before vaporizing their target.

However, not all terrain is created equal. Difficult terrain, for instance, provides a 6+ cover save and a -1 to hit modifier, but it forces most detachments, except Infantry and Walkers, to move at half speed. Obstructing terrain, typically composed of larger ruins and forests, grants a 5+ cover save and the same hit modifier. It even affects Titans but significantly hampers visibility, making long-range shots through it challenging.

Navigating Dangerous Terrain

Dangerous terrain is a different challenge altogether. Troopers and Titans alike take damage when attempting to move through xenos-infested hives, burning promethium pools, and treacherous minefields. Each 1″ of movement in dangerous terrain results in an automatic hit. While enemy units receive a -1 to hit modifier when shooting at you from within dangerous terrain, the terrain itself can inflict more damage. Watch your step and consider bypassing it with aerial assets when possible.

Structures: Fortresses of Battle

Structures play a pivotal role in the grand-scale battles of Legions Imperialis. These large and resilient buildings can be garrisoned by Infantry, providing robust protection against incoming fire, with Cover Saves often reaching 3+. They also impose substantial penalties to hit when shooting at units within and assist occupants in close combat.

However, unlike standard terrain, these structures can be attacked and destroyed. Occupants inside a collapsing building face grave peril as the entire area becomes difficult terrain. Any model failing their save is instantly destroyed.

The Battle Terrain Strategy

By strategically combining area terrain and structures, your battlefields evolve from lethal shooting galleries for colossal war machines into intense skirmishes. Infantry, with their superior mobility in rugged terrain, can outmaneuver their larger, more imposing adversaries.
