Current Trends in Warhammer Age of Sigmar Competitive Play

The battlegrounds of Warhammer Age of Sigmar have expanded from the tunnels of Gallet to the enchanting tundras of Andtor. This shift in scenery brings forth intense competition among generals vying to harness the mystical energies of this frigid realm. With thousands of games and numerous events shaping the landscape, the prevailing factions are starting to emerge.

Nick from the Warhammer TV Team sat down with Matt from the Warhammer Studio to dissect the competitive scene’s data. Their insightful discussion delves deep into the state of competitive play within the Mortal Realms, shedding light on fascinating trends and findings.

Data Analysis and Trends

As customary with previous Metawatch articles, the Warhammer Studio’s data analysis spans a 60-day timeframe. Although only half of this period aligns with the new General’s Handbook: Pitched Battles 2023-24, valuable insights are already apparent.

Faction Win Rates

Here’s a snapshot of the current win rates for various factions. Please note that Bonesplitterz aren’t included due to insufficient logged games. Notably, the Soulblight Gravelords and Ossiarch Bonereapers stand out due to their versatile unit selection, all of which are proving effective. Even lesser-used subfactions like Avengorii for vampires and Null Myriad for Katakros’ forces are making their mark.

Resurgence and Adjustments

Factions that once dominated the Mortal Realms are experiencing a resurgence, bringing them back into the coveted win rate range of 45% to 55%. Significant adjustments in the Battlescroll: Andtor have propelled the Kharadron Overlords and Gloomspite Gitz back into this favorable zone. Collaborative discussions with players and event organizers have led to refinements that have boosted the performance of the Ironjawz, Kruleboyz, and Big Waaagh!, primarily through new Battle Tactics.

Evolving Battle Tactics

Battle Tactics, a focal point of the studio’s analysis, have undergone changes in the new General’s Handbook. A deliberate shift rewards players who allocate resources to achieve objectives, emphasizing proactive strategies. Factions like skaven face challenges due to their Battle Tactics division among Clans. The studio is also closely observing Stormcast Eternals and Maggotkin of Nurgle for similar reasons.

Adapting to Trends

With half of the data corresponding to the new General’s Handbook, the studio is vigilant about factions experiencing downward trends. Challenges within the meta are being identified and addressed. For instance, the Idoneth Deepkin struggle against formidable armies due to limited damage output. Lumineth Realm-Lords’ spellcasting prowess doesn’t translate well to Primal Dice mechanics. Slaves to Darkness armies built around specific units face limitations in maneuvering and accomplishing objectives.

The Path Forward

Guided by this comprehensive analysis, the Warhammer Studio is diligently sifting through data to develop the next Battlescroll, scheduled for release in September. The evolving landscape of competitive play continues to shape the Mortal Realms, and generals must adapt and strategize to emerge victorious on the ever-shifting battlefield.
