Firefight Second Edition Roadmap

Mantic Games is showing off the roadmap for the upcoming second edition of their 40K competitor Firefight. Let’s take a look at what’s coming.

Firefight was first developed in 2015 by Mantic Games. Much like Kings of War was meant to be a more playable alternative to Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Firefight clearly positions itself as a 40K alternative, meant to appeal to players looking for, in Mantic’s advertising: fast paced gameplay, dynamic decisions and just two books!

Firefight is set in the Warpath universe, Mantic’s Sci-Fi setting, where instead of an Emperor ruling all of humanity there is a Corporation, controlled by a council of seven owners of sub-corporations. It actually sounds a bit closer to Mutant Chronicles than 40K, but wait until we get to some of the factions.

The Assault on Exham starter set features space skaven (The Veer-Myn, see what they did there?) and squats (The Forge Fathers – lawsuit pending). For $140 it comes with an impressive 55 models, including two mono-wheel-bike-things, a giant boring machine and a tank! Furthermore, the minis are hard plastic and mostly multi-pose with a variety of armament options.

The Battle of Cabot III box comes with Marauders (Space Orks) and Enforcers (Space Marines). For the same price as the other starter box, this one boast 70 minis, though it is lighter on vehicles. Both boxes come with dice, all necessary counters, and the rulebook, which includes army lists.

Mantic’s roadmap for Firefight’s 2023 release is pictured above. The Rulebook and the two starter sets will be released in August and preorders are already live on the Mantic website. The Rulebook comes with most of the army lists (with a couple notable exceptions), but there is a planned “Companion Update” for September, quite possibly in anticipation to a reception similar to that of 40K’s 10th edition. Other than some “vehicles” here and “terrain” there, the map is a bit light on details, but that is not too surprising.

So what do you think: do either of these starter sets stand out to you? Might this new rulebook be a fun, new way to interact with models you already own? Let us know!
