Hey everyone! Adam, FLG Head Judge and TFG Radio host, here to share what happened at ACO this year for A Song of Ice and Fire.
Jan, one of the coordinators of the A Song of Ice and Fire event at ACO this year, give us a review of the event.
ACO kicked off for A Song of Ice and Fire with an early morning start on Saturday the 17th of June.
17 players from multiple states ranging from Kentucky to Boston and everywhere between were paired up to duke it out for the top spot. A special appearance by Stephen from Sunday Slaughter added a particular shine by live casting the top table to the world. The event took place over Saturday and Sunday with 3 games played on each day.
Almost all factions were represented in the competition except for the mighty Greyjoy. In appropriate fashion, the endless horde of Free folk swarmed the tables. At the end of day 2, Ben (pale warrior) closed out in the top spot while piloting a Night’s Watch army. Followed by Ilya (imitation lobster) in the secondary spot piloting the Free folk horde with Derek (rekster) in the third position while similarly piloting a Free folk horde. One of the players, Anthony C., rolled into the event decked out from head to toe in House Martell clothing as well as carrying a tray built to look like a Martell castle and grounds which he used to transport his Martell army. The man was dedicated to his faction!
One of the exciting components of ASOIAF FLG events is that the top 8 places get an invitation to compete at the national level. As a result, everyone brings their “A” games to receive one of the coveted golden tickets to nationals. This year the qualifiers are as follows: Ben (Pale Warrior), Ilya Kreyer (Immitation Lobster), Derreck Lloyd (Rekster), Jake Buchman (Monsters&Munchkins), John B (Magicblue), Cody Buchman (StannisTheMannis), Omar Eid (Twigg), Anthony C (Stannis Rhllor Whllor).
I would also like to take a moment to mention the amazing community members who donated prize support to this event. My wife and I like to give away entry prizes so that no matter what, everyone gets something just for showing up. In addition, we provided engraved mugs for best in faction and placement medals. Sunday slaughter also provided entry prizes, dice trays, and a tactics board. A friend of mine, Willis (OddandHonest / Resinmancer) also custom sculpted a Viking ship tactics board that looked absolutely amazing. Lastly, a local game store in New Jersey named “The Wargamers Guild” generously donated unit boxes.
Lastly, I would like to give out a giant thank you to FLG for organizing and putting on the event. Without them this couldn’t have happened, and the community would not have been able to meet and connect on this level. I hope that this is the start of a beautiful reoccurring adventure that will repeat every year.
On that note, I’ll see y’all next year!
