GW Grognard: The last codex of an edition

CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 95

Hey everyone! Adam, FLG head judge and TFG Radio host, here to talk about the last books of an edition.

There is a lot of information coming out right now from various sources. We are seeing all the new previews and already making plans for our armies when the new edition of the game dropped. Once the new edition was announced, many people bemoaned the fact that they would only get to play with their new codex for only a few months before having to ditch the codexes for the new datacards. This is the third rest of the game and as such we will look at how long the last codex lasted and how it affected me at the time, from longest to shortest lifespan. These are full codexes not supplements.

Sisters of Battle ( 2nd Edition, August 1997 – Summer 1998)

I loved the 2nd edition books as a whole. I am pretty sure I still have all the codexes. They are chock full of background that helped flesh out a universe that we still knew very little about. Although I had bought the book simply for the background, I soon started planning on building an army. I got to the army list stage before the new edition was announce and kind of derailed my plans to build the army. I have never desired to build the army since. Although many people bring up this army as the poster child for late codexes, it was relevant the longest of the three on his list.

Imperial Agents (7th Edition, December 2016 – June 2017)

I personally hesitate to call this a codex but it is listed as one. I did buy it but mainly because I would sometimes run Space Marines and wanted the book in case I wanted to run some assassins or Inquisitors in the army. Only lasting 6 months, I did see it get a lot of use by players that were trying something different or to just be different. unlike the World Eater or Sisters of Battle book, I do not mourn it’s loss.

World Eaters (9th edition, March 2023 – June 2023)

This one hurts as I was actually excited about this army and the new edition announcement just killed it. I did get all the models to build the army and I am having Angron painted by my friend and TFG Radio co-host, Tom, but the the wind was taken out of my sails on this one. This book has the shortest life span of the three and because I was starting from the ground up I just decided to ride out the edition with my current armies and prepare the World Eaters for the new edition. I do like the Blood Yahtzee rule and will enjoy yelling that as I roll the dice at the start of every turn.

That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed the article. Let me know if you bought a codex at the end of an edition in the comments below. Don’t forget to visit our Facebook, Twitch, and Patreon pages to stay up to date on what we’re up to and when episodes drop!
