If you’re a fan of the widely acclaimed board game Wingspan, get ready to spread your wings and embark on an even more captivating avian adventure with the Wingspan European Expansion. Created by Elizabeth Hargrave and published by Stonemaier Games, this expansion adds new elements and features to the original game, taking players to the diverse landscapes of Europe. In this review, we will explore the exciting additions and enhancements offered by the Wingspan European Expansion, highlighting why it’s a must-have for Wingspan enthusiasts.
The Wingspan European Expansion introduces a wealth of new bird species native to the European continent, allowing players to discover and appreciate the diverse avian life found in Europe’s various habitats. From the majestic Bonelli’s Eagle to the graceful White Stork, each new bird card brings its unique abilities and characteristics, adding depth and complexity to gameplay strategies. The expansion introduces new bird abilities, bonus cards, and end-of-round goals, providing players with a plethora of additional options and tactics to explore. These new elements inject fresh life into the game, keeping players engaged and excited with each playthrough.
While it adds less to the game than the later expansions I would still count this one as a must-have. It is close enough to the base game that it doesn’t have as many overpowered birds (although it does have some amazing ones). the expansion adds Round-end powers to some birds which are a useful mechanic albeit highly situational. The addition of the new round bonus tiles is always a welcome facet, and a few can really through a curve into your game. The fact that this expansion only adds cards, eggs and tiles makes it a cheaper option and one that you don’t need to add onto your box to accommodate. However you like to play Wingspan, this expansion is one of your best value buys.
