Hammer and Bolter Review: Undercity

The Warhammer+ series Hammer and Bolter hasn’t always been kind to the Age of Sigmar episodes. Arguably the worst episode is the first AoS one, Double or Nothing. Monsters was only marginally better, swapping out humor for a look at a under-utilized part of the Sigmar world. However, in these episodes, the characters are typically flat, the setting bizarre and haven’t had the depth to draw you in. , thus I went into this episode with some trepidation.

Fortunately, Undercity easily surpassed both previous episodes. While there are some issues, the animation is very clunky at times, and the show tips its hand too much. The over-stylized nature of Age of Sigmar means you can see a few “twists” miles in advance. However, the characters are likable and the plot makes sense. For whatever reason the Age of Sigmar episodes tend to be set up as anthologies, with only one having a clean ending. It wouldn’t surprise me if we saw these characters again in future episodes.

The episode also does a great job capturing the gritty nature of certain AoS cities making an aesthetic that could easily be set in the Old World. I think this is a workable environment for future stories, and makes me optimistic about the future Sigmar episodes!
