Who, Where, and When?
As we continue to unveil previews, painted models, and hints about Warhammer: The Old World, let’s take a closer look at the prominent factions that will shape the game. This epic adventure unfolds within the Old World, a vast territory extending from the western coast of Bretonnia to the eastern Worlds Edge Mountains. The events occur in the decades leading up to the Great War Against Chaos and the Siege of Praag.
The primary focus of the initial wave of books and supplements is the Border Princes, the lands between the Empire and Orc territory. Nine core factions take center stage in this region, with their rules set to be published alongside the launch of the Old World. Brace yourself for the return of classic kits accompanied by all-new, stunning miniatures.
The Old World before the Great War Against Chaos:
Warhammer: The Old World transports us to the era just before the Siege of Praag. At the heart of this realm lies the sprawling Empire of Man, established by Sigmar but subsequently divided into rival states through centuries of civil war. West of the Empire lies the chivalrous realm of Bretonnia, while the eastern regions, encompassing the Worlds Edge Mountains and the Grey Mountains, are home to the proud Dwarfs.
The mysterious Wood Elves reside within the sprawling forest of Athel Loren, while the seafaring High Elves of Ulthuan maintain colonies and outposts along the Old World coasts. These Elves appoint themselves custodians over the affairs of Man, driven by their arrogance and kinship. However, the Old World is not without its perils. The forces of Chaos and destruction constantly threaten these powerful races and nations.
Throughout the Empire and Bretonnia, savage Beastmen Brayherds emerge from twisted woods, while the Orc and Goblin tribes launch endless hordes from desolate wildernesses and high moors. The skeletal legions of the Tomb Kings of Khemri, hailing from the distant and arid Land of the Dead, add to the turmoil. Lastly, the relentless Warriors of Chaos march from the frozen north, posing a grave threat.
In Warhammer: The Old World, these core factions engage in ceaseless battles. Some seek destruction, others aim to reclaim lost territories, and there are those who serve dark masters and strive to overthrow the established order maintained by the civilized races of Men, Dwarfs, and Elves. The impending darkness looms, compelling these races to march unceasingly to war, protecting their realms.
What About the Other Factions?
While some factions from Warhammer Fantasy Battles are not part of The Old World’s narrative, they will still receive rules upon the game’s launch. Dark Elves, Skaven, Vampire Counts, Daemons of Chaos, Ogre Kingdoms, Lizardmen, and Chaos Dwarfs fall into this category. To cater to fans with these classic armies, we will provide free PDFs of their legacy faction army lists. You can relive the battles of old with your beloved armies.
It’s important to note that we do not plan to publish rules for Warhammer Age of Sigmar miniatures, except for units that were part of the final edition of Warhammer Fantasy Battles and its setting.
What are the other armies up to, then?
In the century preceding the Siege of Praag, the Skaven Under-Empire was torn apart by civil war, prompting them to retreat from the surface world. This disappearance led to the belief that Skaven were mere folklore until they resurfaced. The summoning of the Horned Rat at Skavenblight ended the internal strife and reestablished the Skaven as a formidable power.
After the Vampire Wars, the Von Carsteins were mostly eradicated, causing other vampires to retreat and await a safer time to emerge.
Dark Elves, Lizardmen, Chaos Dwarfs, and Ogre Kingdoms, located far from the Old World, focused inward during this period, immersing themselves in their own affairs.
While Chaos Daemons existed in the past and will rise again, the current period witnesses a decline in the power of Chaos. Asavar Kul’s ascent as the 12th Everchosen will rekindle Chaos’ might, but daemonic servants of individual gods will remain scarce for a while. However, Daemons and Daemon Princes, fueled by mortal worship, still wield power, albeit rarely manifesting in the real world.
Conclusion:
Warhammer: The Old World promises a captivating journey through the realms of Man, Dwarfs, Elves, and their relentless battles against the forces of Chaos. With the spotlight on nine core factions and the return of classic kits accompanied by fresh miniatures, anticipation for the game’s launch is reaching new heights.
