A Requiem for the Dreadnought

Hi all,
On the GW page today we got a nice, short send off for the venerable box-naught. For many players this has long been an iconic model. My first space marine army had a metal one on a square base almost 16 years ago!

What is striking about this model is how little it changes in its iterations. The later plastic kit would largely serve as a refinement of the idea, and it would go untouched for years. Throughout their history these dreadnoughts often struggled with finding a place in the meta as they usually packed a punch, but were very fragile. Outside of a Grey Knight army in 5th edition they were not usually competitive but were always popular.

We have seen a number of variations on the chassis that have either lived on or already per-deceased the dread. The anti-air dreads introduced in 5th (I think) with the helical targeting array now only exist in 30k. Others like the Venerable dread and ironclad dread may yet live on.

With this models passing, its replacement steps forward.

I think we will see alot more of these replacements over the course of 10th ed as GW moves into a new direction. I don’t know how TOs will handle the old vs new Sternguard kits and the like but this moment is a turning point in 40k’s history.
