One of my least armies to play against has always been the Death guard. Their resilience and the ick factor always get to me. These guys have been down and out competitively for a while, so let’s see if 10th will change that!
In the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium, even a mere runny nose can be cause for alarm. For the Death Guard, it may signify a grim fate, as they revel in the spreading diseases and foul maladies of the Chaos god Nurgle. With their swollen, mutated bodies and rusted blades, the Death Guard march relentlessly, leaving trails of disease and destruction in their wake. Join us as we delve into the depths of this corrupted Legion and explore their strategies in the new edition of Warhammer 40,000.
Engaging a Death Guard army means confronting an onslaught of supernatural contagions that contaminate everything they touch. Countless infections cause flesh and armor alike to rot and suppurate, weakening enemy defenses before the inevitable assault.
Every Death Guard unit benefits from Nurgle’s Gift, an aura that strengthens over time during the battle. Enemy units within the Contagion Range suffer a reduction of 1 in Toughness as they succumb to unnatural plagues. This blighted salve compensates for the increased resilience found across the board in the new edition.
The potency of these contagions even warps the landscape to Nurgle’s will. As the Death Guard spreads their sickness, Nurgle’s garden encroaches on realspace. Any objectives controlled by the Death Guard during their Command phase remain under their control, even if they move away. Furthermore, these objectives gain Nurgle’s Gift, weakening enemies who seek to reclaim them with reality-warping pox.
If you relish commanding formidable warriors, the Death Guard is the faction for you. The sons of Mortarion are colossal beings, walking fortresses brimming with rotting innards and mutations. Held together by ancient ceramite, spit, and devotion to Nurgle, these Blightlord Terminators are now even more formidable.
Boasting a Toughness of 6 and a 2+ Save with a 4+ invulnerable save, the Blightlord Terminators are a testament to resilience. Trading a bit of mobility for an extra pip of Toughness, they rank among the sturdiest Infantry units available. Their Lethal Hits effortlessly dispatch tougher targets, while Blistering Fusillade grants re-rolls for Wound rolls of 1 against the closest enemy, synergizing perfectly with the Toughness reduction inflicted by Nurgle’s Gift.
Additionally, the Death Guard manifest their psychic prowess through Malignant Plaguecasters. These sorcerers unleash a Plague Wind composed of corrosive vomit and feculent gas, causing Pestilent Fallout that leaves enemies stumbling and coughing up bile and blood.
The Death Guard enter battle with a resolute purpose, often accompanied by Daemon Engines oozing with disease and corruption. Among these abominations, the Plagueburst Crawlers stand out. Crafted by Mortarion himself, these tanks are equipped with Plagueburst mortars, long-ranged weapons designed to obliterate infantry.
With impressive range and devastating attacks, these putrefying bombardments are followed by Spore-laced Shock Waves, inducing Battle-shock tests for enemy Infantry units.
Defeat is almost certain, and the Death Guard have various methods to expedite the process. With places to be and diseases to spread, the Plague Company employs the Sanguous Flux, one of Nurgle’s most vicious maladies. Units blessed by this contagion gain Sustained Hits 1 on their melee attacks, increasing to Sustained Hits 2 when within range of an Infected objective marker. The bubotic blades of the Blightlord Terminators prove especially deadly when infused with this Stratagem.
