40K 10th Edition – Chaos Space Marines Preview

the GW Community site is continuing its faction previews, and today’s subject is the Chaos Space Marines!

To start with we get to see the faction ability. It is a risk/reward mechanic that can supply some hefty bonuses:

Sustained hits is exploding 6’s, I am not sure if they have revealed what lethal hits are yet. I wonder if it might be auto-wounding? The fact that every unit can use this ability might be a bit much but there is a risk.

One of the core CSM units is the Legionaries unit, let’s see how they have changed:

Heavy melee weapons might be new, they look like they have a decent statline. Autocannons now are S9 and D3 solidifying their role as monster/light vehicle hunters. It also looks like the Balefire Tome is just a shooting attack now. Chaos icons might be a must given how important Ld is now. Their ability is also quite good but melee focused. I am still worried that there seem to be a lot of re-rolls still in the game.

Next up is Abaddon

You really see the difference with Robute here as his Toughness is only 5. His buffs are also very good as you can built a 4++ castle around him. Also, weirdly, he does not have the Lone Operator ability, unless that is noted elsewhere. His Dark Destiny ability is very good and, if there are no caps on CP regen, can get you 1-2 CP a turn easily.

Next up are some weapon updates:

Both of these weapons seem quite useful. I think the Helldrake gets a lot more shots now. Fleshmetal guns are also quite brutal, but you are at the mercy of the D6/D3. Deepstriking these guys within 12″ of a vehicle might spell its doom.

Lastly we get to see the new strat which looks very good:

The strats will have different buffs depending on the units mark which I kinda dislike. I am not sure whether you have to pick another target if your Nurgle unit is now out of range or if you lose the shots.
