Hi All,
We have another big reveal today, as the Warhammer Community site has provided additional details about 10th. In this article we will cover the new game type that is a blend of the GT packet and the Tempest of War format.
In the new book there is only one missions listed. This isn’t wholly surprising as I imagine most mission rules will come with the GT packs. The missions is fought over 4 objectives and the only variation is the board size.
The biggest change comes in how mission rules are determined. Firstly, divide the cards into their respective decks: Deployment, Mission Rules, Primary Missions, Secondary Missions, and Gambits (one deck per player).
You then shuffle each deck, and draw one card from the Deployment, Mission Rules, and Primary Mission decks. These determine the mission outline, deployment and victory points. Secondary missions have changed to either be fixed or ones that can randomly change adding in a bit of player decision making. Furthermore, the secondaries can change based on whether you are a defender or attacker!
Lastly there are gambit cards. These are picked at the end of the third round from a deck identical to each player. Gambits replace your original objective and do not need to be taken. Players keep all the VP they have scored thus far but cannot score the primary mission any longer. There are three initial gambits and one is discarded randomly at the start of the game.
Gambits are a bit of a reach are are difficult to pull off, but they can help you claw your way back if the mission is going south.
Overall, I find these changes fascinating. There is a lot of room for depth here but also a lot of RNG. I think that they may release new options for these cards alongside each codex as a way to make a bit more money like they did in 7th edition. I am very curious to see if this method of play will become the dominant version, or if it will be played alongside the GT pack. It does give GW more ways to rework the game going forward but it also provides new avenues for imbalance.
