In a completely unexpected and totally unforeseeable move, I’ve put together a Shadow Collective list. Let’s check it out!
You didn’t think I would actually ignore Shadow Collective, did you? Not a chance, especially considering a SC force just finished second place overall at Worlds! You read that right, Darth Maul rode an A-A5 Speeder truck packed to the absolute max with Black Sun Enforcers all the way to the final round at worlds, knocking out some of the highest ranked players in the world along the way. Legion hasn’t seen something this exciting since a guy brought a six activation list to LVO and went 5-1. While that army featured Palpatine in a tank, the Shadow Collective army that took Worlds by storm featured Enforcers painted a near-blinding shade of pink. This is why I play casual games.
In the spirit of these guys being mercenaries, I am not going to stick to a single army list this time around. Unit entries from all army lists are on the table! These guys are a motley collection of guns for fire, after all!
There is very little variation in the tournament list. It’s Maul, six squads of Enforcers and the truck. I’m going to proxy that directly into Konflikt ‘47 units, but I am also going to assume that our imaginary player purchased the Shadow Collective starter box back when it was shiny and new, before the meta was better defined. This will allow us to field a couple more units and play around with some more unit types. I will also throw out ideas for several of the personalities for this list, because they are cool and may have been purchased by our player for no better reason, but first:
Maul (10 Veteran Siberian Terror Squad + 3 SMGs) 139 Points
This is the Death Dealer from Dathomir’s second time in a list and while I think proxying him for a huge pack of braying hounds is funny, this feels like a more suitable proxy for a powerful jedi in their prime. After playing around with several different proxy options for jedi (slow armored guys, fast armored guys, werewolves), I think I like this the best, at least for the younger, nimbler force wielders. The Siberian Terror Squad is fast, fanatical, beastly in close combat and has limited, short range firepower to represent force powers.
Gar Saxon (Battle-Frame Second Lieutenant +2 men) 115 points
Another near clone of a previous entry, Gar Saxon is Clone Captain Rex without a flag and with an extra SMG. He’s fast, tough (5+ shrug) and no slouch when it comes to shooting at close quarters. He can’t fly, though, so maybe you could drop one of the SMGs and give him that ability for roughly the same points.
Bossk (Veteran Light Mortar Team) 46 points
Look, this isn’t the sexiest choice for this incredibly sexy lizard person, but it is what it is. Bossk carries a Relby-v10 Mortar Rifle, which has decent fire power along with pierce 1 and its suppressive. The best analogue is a light mortar team of two guys who also have rifles if they want to shoot those instead. Sorry Bossk, you deserve better.
Boba Fett, IG-88, Din Djarin (Paragon Squad) 70 points
This one might take some explaining, as it may seem like I’m doing these modern heroes dirty. The US Paragon unit is essentially super soldiers (think Captain America) but they all turned out a bit different, both from him and each other. A Paragon squad can select three members from a list of six. They all have their own abilities and armament, and they each contribute a team skill as well. Here’s a little chart to show you how this works:
Hopefully this makes sense. The thing I like about this is that you can have these three roaming the battlefield together as a well oiled murder machine, OR, you could give each of them a squad of their own but keep their Paragon profile. The American army lists have a Paragon Support Unit entry that is a squad of veteran soldiers lead by a more generic paragon. There are four archetypal paragons you can choose from to lead these squads, and they all happen to look a lot like the named paragon entries. They also come with personal skills and skills they impart to their squads, like the named guys above.
Pyke Syndicate Foot Soldiers (6 IJA Infantry w/ compression rifles) 84 points
IJA squads are most frequently portrayed with one member, usually the squad leader, brandishing an actual melee weapon. I gave everyone compression rifles to represent the rinky dink looking P13 Long Blasters of the Pyke Syndicate. To represent the electrowhip you could give that model the Tooth and Claw ability, making him a lot meaner in hand to hand.
Pyke Syndicate Foot Soldier with P13-M Disruptor (Sniper) 50 points
I considered making this guy an AT rifle, but he is more valuable this way, I think.
Black Sun Enforcers (11 Soviet Regular Infantry w/ the WORKS!) 182 points x 3
Oh baby, now we’re in it! This is where I assume our player saw the results from Worlds and impoverished themselves in order to emulate their new hero. Six squads of Enforcers gives you 36 minis if you leave out the Vigos. The tournament list had exclusively Mag-Det Enforcers, rather than any scatter guns, but I am taking the chance here that our player assembled at least three of them to serve as LMGs in these squads. Everyone else has SMGs. The Mag-Det guys count as just regular enforcers, but they should definitely be included because we need a total of 33 minis for these three squads AND, I gave everyone tank grenades, so they will look the part. So there’s three squads of infantry, each worth more points than Darth Maul
Mandalorian Super Commandos (7 Jaakari Falcons w/ 3 SMGs) 176 points
Most factions in Konflikt ‘47 have a jump infantry option with the “flight” special rule. The Finnish version wear armor, making them harder to wound, and they carry assault rifles by default, some of which can be swapped out for SMGs. Mixing these weapons types together felt very Mandalorian.
A-A5 Speeder Truck (Truck) 39 points
It’s a truck.
And there you have it! A force of mercenaries, cobbled together from four different army lists. Not bad! There is next to no anti tank capability in this army, so that’s something to look out for, but all of these lists have been fairly light on AT, giving the last entry on this list more survivability than it might get otherwise.
I hope you enjoyed this little thought exercise while waiting for some real Legion news. Never forget that your models are YOUR models and you can use them how you see fit. Don’t let canon and accuracy get in the way of you having a fun time with some friends, if you can help it. Until next time, happy hobbying!
