What to Expect For The Old World at Warhammer Fest

Hi all,
I was excited to see that the Old World is part of the news and previews list for Games Workshop’s upcoming Warhammer Fest 2023. As we prepare for whatever reveal is in store, I think we should review some of the past rumors and make some guesses. Many of these came fro the Faeit site so take them with a degree of caution.

Looking over some of the past rumors from Faeit here is what we have:

  • Battle for Skull Pass and Island of Blood are getting reprints
  • The initial release will be small, just a Launch Box, Rulebook, the Compendium and an Accessories Pack. More releases will come in 2024
  • Launch Set will be Empire vs. Orcs
  • First (6) Factions to get releases will be Empire > Orcs & Goblins > Chaos > Kislev > Bretonnia > Dwarfs
  • We know GW will be re-releasing older kits as explained in their last Old World Community post
  • Projected release of Fall 2023

Assuming these rumors are correct we should expect to get some idea of the launch box set at this preview. GW likes to make these announcements a few months ahead of their release as we have seen already with 10 edition. Last year they revealed the Horus Heresy box set at Warhammer Fest which could also mean that it is too early for the Old World to get it’s box set preview. At the very least I think we will get a date for the release from this event.

I think GW knows it is rapidly losing ground in this market, with the successes of Conquest, KoW and other competing Warhammer fantasy legacy fan rules. I don’t think they can delay much longer as they will just get shut out.

I know many players are a little disconcerted over the announced change to base sizes, but I think it has some good implications. I think the games will be smaller as the models will take up more space. I think the bases are needed as the newer fantasy models were a mess to rank up, especially cavalry models. Furthermore, this issue persistent in banner models too, my skeleton banners were a nightmare to hold in place without strong magnets. I am also guessing the board size will stay the same. Why? Because it is the same for the Horus Heresy, which is is getting double-billing with. I think GW sees this game and the Hours Heresy as more advanced options for players, which use a bigger board.

Anyway, this is a lot of conjecture but I am very excited. Who knows what wee will see!
