Evaluating the value of Saturday’s Boarding Patrols

Hi All!
We are continuing our series looking at each of the boarding patrol sets and seeing which provide the best deal for players. There are a ton of patrols coming up for sale this Saturday so let’s get started!

Tau Boarding Patrol

Included:

Anticipated price: $130

Anticipated Savings: $70
Assessment: While my brother will price this differently (to him a new Farsight model is priceless), this is another box that offers decent value. If you want to make a Farsight Enclaves army, this patrol plus the combat patrol box will give you a decent, short-range focused army. You will be a little light on transports for your breachers, and will want to get more suits, but it’s not a bad place to start. If you don’t want to play Farsight Enclaves there’s no real reason to get this box.

Snikrot and the Ork Boarding Patrol

Included:

Anticipated price: $130

Anticipated Savings: $115
Assessment: A better deal than the Tau box, this combat patrol does provide a smattering of units that I am not sure go together well. Now I am not an Ork player but I think Lootas would provide a better value. However, this is a boarding patrol and the Flashgitz short range and nautical flair might carry the day. If you are just starting out I am not sure this is a great deal, as the Beast Snaggas are a bit cheaper on the second-hand market, and I am not sure you will ever use Flashgitz in a non-boarding patrol game.

Eldar and Drukhari were already analyzed here

Boarding Patrol: Grey Knights

Included:

Anticipated price: $130

Anticipated Savings: $40
Assessment: Meh. This is an okay deal but the Grey Knights are hamstrung by the fact that their Combat Patrol box is absolutely amazing. It is identical, except for $30 more you get a Dreadknight and Librarian, but no Crowe. The Grey Knight models are also highly customizable meaning you can change the terminators into paladins and the Librarian into other Hqs. The Boarding Patrol becomes more appealing if the price drops to $115 but I doubt that will happen.

Boarding Patrol: Necrons

Included:

Anticipated price: $130

Anticipated Savings: $100
Assessment: This is actually a pretty good deal for a Boarding Patrol and it has no units that overlap with the Combat Patrol box making it a pretty good buy for newer players. The Destroyers and Praetorians also don’t appear in other box sets making them a tantalizing option if you are lacking one or the other. As the “Silver Tide” lists for Necrons are meta every couple editions or so the extra warriors aren’t an additional burden. You could always find room for them. Out of all the options so far this might be my #1 pick for best value, and for best options!
