There has been some friction in the Total War Warhammer world as Creative assembly has announced the price for its upcoming DLC release of the Chaos Dwarfs. The stated price is $25 with a pre-order price that is discounted 10%. What this statement lacks is the context of how much more expensive this DLC is compared to previous options.
Take a look at some of the other options:
- Champions of Chaos $15
- Ogre Kingdoms $12
- The Silence and the Fury $10
- Rise of the Tomb Kings/ Vampire Coast $12 ea.
What seems to be galling players is that the price hike isn’t bringing with it a commensurate increase in the content in the game. It appears the Chaos Dwarfs will have 3 legendary lords and one legendary hero compare to four in the Chaos Champion, Tomb Kings, and Vampire Coast releases. The player push-back has been mounting, such that the developers released the following statement:
At first glance I didn’t think too much of a $25 DLC price as I have been utterly corrupted by the Paradox game model. This model is increasingly becoming the most popular as company slowly improves the game over the years adding bit-sized DLC packs to encourage continued revenue streams. That being said, when you compare this DLC to others offered in the game it is surprising to see such a big prices jump. This is then compounded by appearing to offer less content. Now, the Chaos Dwarfs do look like they will have some unique faction twists that might justify the extra costs, but that will have to be pretty good to make up for paying more and having fewer lords.
As ever, I applaud the players for standing up to CA. They have done a good job on the game so far but the players are the ones who hold the bargaining power. I hope the AMA goes well and that the developers hear and understand the concerns of the player base. Dialogue doesn’t fix everything, but it’s a pretty good place to start.
And remember, Frontline Gaming sells gaming products at a discount, every day in their webcart!
Rise of Tomb Kings and Vampire Coast are $19 not $12
