LVO Age of Sigmar Narrative Event – Wrap Up Interview

Hi all,
We are back with Bill to discuss the climactic end to the Age of Sigmar Narrative event at the LVO!

1. So how did the story wrap up? What was the epic conclusion?

The story ended up with a Skaven player winning the day after all was said and done. Great to see them do well!  All in all, the Caravans were pretty evenly balanced, something I had aimed to fix from last time. The Caravan known as House Davron won the day and spread their influence across the desert and will be well placed to consolidate their gains and stay wealthy!

The players had overwhelmingly positive feedback from the event. Part of the player pack is a feedback sheet for them to give me their honest thoughts, so I can fold that into next years event!

2. In your opinion what was the best moment of the event (ie. Epic save roll, narrative moment, etc.)

There were so many great moments, on all the tables, but one stands out. The first time a wall section of the fortress board fell, allowing the attackers to run inside was pretty epic. Seeing Gargants smashing things and the forces of Sigmar yelling for reinforcements was quite the sight.

3. Reflecting back on the day, what things went better than you had hoped?

I was really glad to see the players really growing together and playing a lot of 2v1 and 2v2 games by their own choice. That’s when you know the players are enjoying it. It was really great to see all those folks who were relative strangers at the beginning, trading e-mail addresses and social details at the end. Folks made friends, and that’s all that really matters!!

4. Is there anything you would want to change moving forward?

I have to fix the third scenario… it was bad, very bad! That’s on me. I also think the caravans are tired of the desert heat and may be looking to expand their influence to other areas, perhaps even other realms. I know they sent some scouts to Ghur, so who knows what may be in the offing for next year? I may also make the points a bit smaller, to help the games end a little faster

5. What surprised you about the event (positively or negatively?)

So many surprises!! The great players, the awesome tables, the amazing work by the FLG folks to make it smooth as silk. Mostly, the best part was having Byron Orde from Artis Opus and FaceHammer fame judge the painting contest. The players were thrilled when I announced that and even more excited when he popped around to take a look. Also, seeing the international flavor of the narrative was great, players from all over the country and the world were in the mix, great times!

6. What advice do you have for other players looking to run their own narrative events?

Always remember to create a framework, and not a railroad.  Make an event where the big things are defined and let the players decide how they want to go into it, change it, re-shape it or whatever they want (within reason). The players grabbed the scenarios and made their own storylines. The Fyreslayer’s player decided that he was going to get all the Ur-Gold from all the tables, even if it meant losing games. He wheeled and dealed to make it happen and told his story. I could have made a rule to limit the amount of Ur-Gold, but why? He didn’t negatively affect anyone else, and made it his personal ‘victory condition’, so he wins. That’s just a small example of how to make sure the players can tell their own story, and not just live in yours!

Thanks for the words of wisdom! It sounds like it was a great event and you are already working hard on how to improve it for next year!
