Proxy Wars – A Konflikt Far Far Away (Part III of IV)

Prepare your mostly machine body for another installment of Proxy Wars! This week we buck the trend of blindly following people’s interests to take a look at the least popular faction in the Star Wars: Legion tournament scene, the Separatists.

I am not going to lie, I have been looking forward to this week’s installment of Proxy Wars since the beginning, which is why I bumped the Separatists up to week three, over the noticeably more popular Galactic Republic faction.

Did I do this because these perennial underdogs are my favorite faction? Am I enamored of the hilarious antics of the bumbling battle droids? Do I think Jedi can’t hold a candle to a four armed, lightsaber wielding droid with a cough? Heavens, no! I am appalled by this faction and I continually vacillate between sadness and rage at their inclusion in the numerous depictions of the Clone Wars.

However, I am tickled pink by my plan for their inclusion in the Konflikt ‘47 universe, which consists of turning them into Brits! That’s right, I am going to take the noble Tommy and turn him into a ludicrous murder bot that is terrible at its one and only job. Here we go!

Super Tactical Droid (Veteran First Lieutenant) – 95 Points

Keeping with our theme of squishy commanders, the Super Tactical Droid will serve as our First Lieutenant. This droid is going to behave exactly like it’s human counterparts, for game purposes. Thought it is a droid, it will be the only one on the list that is not subject to our special “Automaton” rule; more on that later.

Count Dooku (Veteran Captain and Two Men With SMGs) – 145 Points

Dooku isn’t as spry as he used to be, despite him jumping around all nimbly-bimbly in the prequels. However, he still exercises supreme authority, and his presence on the battlefield should represent that of someone far above the commander of the paltry force depicted on the board, hence, a captain. He and his two man retinue (he has three wounds) all have submachineguns, which represents him force pushing/choking and light saber throwing as he ables around, but he’s truly dangerous up close.

Darth Maul and 3 DRK-1 Sith Probe Droids (9 War Dogs with 3 Handlers) – 93 Points

Let the hilarity begin! Darth Maul is representing 9 War Dogs, the Probes are the three handlers with pistols (Electro-stun Micro Blasters). This is an impressive twelve wounds walking around the battlefield, and they can’t wait to sink their teeth into you! Oh my goodness I can’t wait to see how this plays out.

Cad Bane (4 Elite SAS Infantry with SMGs) – 128 Points

How could you possibly pass up Cad Bane? He’s the meanest, nastiest desperado to grace the Star Wars scene in a generation and he is suitably scary here. The SAS soldiers he is representing are stubborn and immune to horror, and being elite, they have the chance to activate a second time each turn. Bane’s Dual LL-30 Blaster Pistols are done sterling service by four SMGs. Don’t get near this guy.

A Word About Automatons

The inspiration for turning Brits into Separatists came from the British Automated Infantry unit for K47. These guys are nowhere near as sentient as Star Wars droids, but considerably menacing, armed with MMGs and HMGs. Their “Automaton” rule makes them take order checks every time they activate and cannot benefit from officers, medics or national characteristics. They are immune to horror, cannot assault, ambush or perform reactions. However, they CAN first fixed weapons while moving, which is scary. I am going to throw this rule on every droid unit in the army, but tone it down considerably by removing the need for order checks even without pins and also saying that they can benefit from officers and medics if they are also droids.

B1 Battle Droid With Binoculars (Forward Artillery Observer) – Free

Every faction in K47 gets a special trait or “National Characteristic.” In the case of the Brits, they get a free forward artillery observer, and the droid with binoculars fits that role perfectly. This is our first, proper droid, besides the Super Tactical one up top, and it is our first Automaton!

B1 Battle Droids (9 Regular Infantry + LMG) – 110 Points x2

Automatons galore! Every droid list that has gone anywhere in recent tournaments has been overflowing with B1s. The fewest squads I saw in a list was four, so I am going to assume we have four squads to play with here. For these squads we need all 16 droids armed with E-5 Blasters (8 per squad) and 2 of the E-5C droids to serve as our LMGs. I am ignoring our three remaining droids peering through binoculars because I hate the look of them as NCOs in the midst of more dynamic poses. I have a use for them coming up, however.

E-60R B1 Trooper (Bazooka Team) – 60 Points x3

Here we are! The remaining three binocular bots will be paired with the E-60R B1 troopers to make three bazooka teams. This is considerably more anti tank weaponry than the other lists so far, which is fun.

IG-100 MagnaGuards (5 Elite SAS Infantry with SMGs) – 160 Points

These are the ultimate droid special forces troopers (but they are still droids!), and as such they are representing SAS troopers, which means they are stubborn, have the chance to activate twice a turn, and they are tank hunters (moderately better at attacking tanks than regular infantry). Since they are droids, they are automatons, but they should get to ignore the prohibition on assault orders. The SMGs represent their Precision Laser Darts and extreme badassery in melee.

RPS-6 MagnaGuard (M17 Tesla Cannon) – 85 Points

Rounding out the base thousand point list is the final MagnaGuard model, representing the M17 Tesla cannon, a truly devastating weapon. Normal the Tesla Cannon is deployed as an artillery piece, but since a droid is walking around with it on its shoulder we will remove the Gun Shield rule that gives the crew a cover bonus.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Super Battle Droids (3 Automated Infantry with SMGs) – 90 Points

These guys need a little bit of shoe-horning, but not a lot. Basically they should be fielded as vanilla Automated Infantry, though their Arm Cannons are in no way equal to MMGs, which represent a significant amount of the unit cost. Play them as having SMGs (the automaton restriction on assault orders remains) and half their points cost to 15.

AAT Battle Tank (Sherman V) – 205 Points

The Sherman is a medium tank with a medium AT gun up front, co-axial MMG on top and a forward facing MMG as well. Not a bad chap to have around.

DSD1 Dwarf Spider Droid (Grizzly Medium Assault Walker) – 200 Points

It’s a walker with a great big gun sticking right out of its “face.” Seems like a no brainer!

There you have my choices for fielding a Separatist army in Konflikt 47. If I were a bigger fan of this faction’s aesthetic I might actually like to try to out, it’s a very strange list! There are almost no support weapons other than AT, but the regular troops pack quite a punch and have a lot of fun special rules to try out. Give it a shot and let me know how it goes!
