So I definitely did not see this coming. It would appear that GW is bringing back Regiments of Renown from the depths of Warhammer Fantasy lore. These regiments were unique formations that could serve in any army. Originally, they were specific mercenary groups, but now GW is allowing you to bring specific formations from other armies into your own. It looks like there will be some limitations so you don’t have Chaos Daemons fighting with the forces of order against their own side. In order to allow this, a new formation has been added to matched play games.
The first of the box sets is aimed at order factions and features a solid brick of dwarfs. These guys get a custom rune that will make them quite effective at holding objectives.
Full rules for each regiment will be available for free in the next White Dwarf and available online. This strongly feels like an attempt to get rid of excess stock for certain models, or as an attempt to lure people into starting a new army. I feel like 90% of these units might be bad, but that last 10% might be game breaking.
Adding in mixed allies that normally break the rules can make for some very fun and interesting armies. This is especially true when you have such a wild setting as Age of Sigmar where certain realms have unique twists to them. time will tell if more sets will be released, or if this is a flash in the pan.
And remember, Frontline Gaming sells gaming products at a discount, every day in their webcart!
That which was old is new again. I had the Nightmare Legion in the long long long ago.
