Proxy Wars – A Konflikt Far Far Away (Part II of IV)

Time for another installment of Proxy Wars, where I try to convince you to play a new game with models you already have. Last week we looked at using your Imperial miniatures to play Konflikt ‘47. This week we are going to give them some opponents using a Rebel Alliance force.

For those who are unfamiliar (and did not read my article from last week), Konflikt ‘47 is an alternate history wargame in which a nuke opened a rift in space-time and gave sci-fi tech to all the World War 2 factions. The game, based heavily on the Bolt Action rules, is very fun and engaging. Last week I showed how easily a Legion Imperial army could be converted into a K47 German army. Now let’s take a look at a Rebel List.

Using my rationale from last week, I have taken a couple Rebel lists that have placed or at least been mentioned in recent Legion tournaments and converted them into a K47 army. The Rebels are representing a Russian force, a decision made entirely based on the availability of Werebears to the Russians. More on that later, but I think you know where it’s going.

First things first, the Rebels have A LOT of legendary leaders and operatives. The fundamental difference between Legion and Konflikt ‘47 is that Legion is a game about characters and K47 is not. Both games are about tactics and army synergy, however, so we need to figure out what we can do with these minis. Where the Imperials were forced to take a basic officer as their leader, I think it is appropriate for the Rebels to use one of their named Commanders as an actual commander.

Leia Organa (Veteran Mk2 Armored First Lieutenant) – 110 Points

Insert any commander you wish in this spot, except Luke. They are representing heavily armored soldiers with assault rifles. They have more shots than rifle armed infantry with a little less range and they are slow. They are also harder to wound and have a saving throw. Think of it as “plot armor.” If you have extra commanders lying around, you can add up to two more minis to this squad at 23 points each. Favorite pairings are Leia and Han, Han and Chewie, Andor and Erso.

Luke Skywalker (9 Veteran Siberian Terror Squad + Sarge SMG) – 120

Yes, Luke is representing a nine man squad of knife wielding, super-soldier sychopaths. Despite their name, the Siberian Terror Squad does not actually cause terror. They are fast (like a young Jedi), fanatical (like a determined Jedi) and immune to fire (like an asbestos Jedi). Where Vader is represented by 9 attacks and 3 wounds with armor saves, Luke is 9 attacks, 9 wounds and no saves. Vader is harder to wound, but will lose three of his attacks for each wound he takes, while Luke will lose one attack with each wound. Luke costs exactly twice as many points as Vader. He also has a sub-machine gun.

Rebel Veterans (6 Veteran Infantry + LMG) – 111 Points x2

Rebel Veterans seem to be the backbone of most Rebel lists, so I had to take at least two of them. Use the squad leader and all four regular troopers. The CM-0/93 serves as a squad LMG.

Mark II Medium Blaster (Veteran Medium Machine Gun Team) – 65 Points

Wherever the veterans go, the Medium Blasters go too, it seems. The Soviet list only allows for a single MMG team, so you are welcome to ignore this restriction, but I took only one. Remember that this one models represents a squad of three men and therefore has three wounds.

Wookiee Warriors (4 Ursus Infantry) – 88 Points

Werewolves! Unfortunately, this is not quite the no-brainer it may seem. The only Rebel list to make it to the top 8 at Pax Unplugged last year had a unit of Wookiee Warriors (Kashyyyk Resistance) with a bowcaster and targeting scopes. That is decidedly non-melee oriented, and the Ursus Infantry is a strictly melee unit. My best workaround is to say they are armed with rifles and to encourage you to charge with them.

Commando Strike Team (Veteran Sniper Team) – 65 Points

The same Pax Unplugged list also brought a Commando Strike Team with a DH-447 Sniper. Here the sniper model is representing a team of 2.

Commandos (6 Special Forces) – 162 Points

Where there is a Commando Strike Team there is a Commando Squad! Not on any of the tournament lists, actually, but you had to buy the whole box to get the sniper, so why not use the rest of those models? You have a squad leader, a Saboteur and four grunts waiting to be called up. Soviet special forces are nasty. They are only armed with rifles, but they are immune to horror, can strike twice in melee, are better than most at outflanking, and have a chance of activating multiple times in a turn.

Laser Cannon Team (Veteran M-42 Anti-Tank Gun) – 60 Points

This was a tough call, as this Laser Cannon represents the only true Anti-tank threat in the army. It needs to pack a punch, but I couldn’t justify making it too large a gun. The M-42 is a compromise with a decent range of 48”, a bonus to hit at short range and a respectable penetration value of +4. Armor will need to respect it.

Tauntaun Riders (Veteran Gaz Jeep + SMG) – 28 Points x3

The top Rebel player at the LVO last week brought three Tauntaun riders. They are not mechs, as they have no armor or weaponry besides the rider’s sidearm, but they are very fast and maneuverable. I decided to make them jeeps and tack on an extra 3 points to give them the ability to shoot an SMG.

So here we are at 976 points. Not bad! This list does not have a lot of flexibility, however, so let’s see what we could do with a few more minis:

Rebel Troopers (11 Inexperienced Infantry + LMG) – 0 Points

Soviet lists can take a single, inexperienced infantry unit for free. We don’t have the minis to represent it in the list above, but if you bought the core set you easily have 11 troopers (the max size for this squad) lying around. And you don’t have to do this, either. These minis would make excellent standard infantry units with an LMG as well, though that costs points.

AT-RT (Regular Cossack Light Walker) – 100 Points

If you bought the core set then you also have one or two of these lying around. Technically the Cossack Light Walker has a light autocannon and a coaxial MMG, but I say ignore the autocannon if you are taking it with a Rotary Blaster or ignore the MMG if you want to represent the Laser Cannon upgrade

Rebel Pathfinders (6 Veteran Scouts) – 84 Points

Scouts are veteran infantry that can forward deploy or outflank skillfully. You could also give them SMGs and/or anti-tank grenades.

Mandalorians (7 Veteran Heavy Infantry) – 196 Points

Let’s say you want to field all of Clan Wren. Here is how I would go about it: take all seven minis as Heavy Infantry. They are slow, but hard to wound and they get armor saves. They have the choice of firing submachine guns or AT-Rifles (jetpack rockets) each turn. The only thing missing is the Jump rule, which you can tack on, maybe for the cost of one extra mini.

And there we go! The main list is what I would expect rebel tournament players to have, but someone who bought the core box or went for an Endor or Scarif theme will have something completely different. You decide how you want to play, but please do play Konflikt ‘47. It rules.
