Today we are chatting with Darren again as we recap the 40k Narrative event!
1. So how did the story wrap up? What was the epic conclusion?
So at the start of the event we had three planets and one space outpost being fought over by the four teams of Crusaders, Invaders, Raiders, Watchers. By the event’s end, a nascent C’tan, known as The Hollow One, has emerged from its prison beneath the surface of Paucity. To make matters worse, this emergence has unleashed The Deadtide, a wave of destructive energy and gibbering souls that destroys all it touches. Alliances are formed out of desperation as teams fought to escape with the knowledge they need to escape The Hollow One’s wrath. In the end, the C’tan was then pulled into the moon by carefully actived wards and the efforts of the Displacer Gate, a rare version of a webway gate. Shortly after this, the “moon” accelerated out of the system and into a black hole. After this victory, the Watchers quietly disappear, their long vigil over. As for the other battle zones, Belladonna II and Janus were devastated by the Invader forces, though the Crusaders were able to push back enough to save them from complete destruction. Meanwhile, Outpost Libra suffered such critical damage that the station has been pushed from orbit. Rumors that the now drifting hulk is being outfitted with engines by Orkoid engineers remain troubling but unconfirmed.
2. In your opinion what was the best moment of the event (ie. Epic save roll, narrative moment, etc.
Since I didn’t play in the event, my personal favorite was giving out the awards for Best Sportsmanship, Best Hobbyist, and Best Generalist. It was so gratifying to see how everyone came together to vote and recognize their fellow players, many of whom they’d met only that weekend. The sense of appreciation and comradery is always great to watch grow.
3. Reflecting back on the day, what things went better than you had hoped?
Since my only prior experience was running a 20 person event over Facebook, almost everything went better than expected. We were blessed with very few issues.
4. Is there anything you would want to change moving forward?
Yes! I have learned quite a bit. First off, I will absolutely have a megaphone day 1 (editor’s note: this is very important) I acquired it partway through the event and it really made the difference. The other big takeaway, is to not make 3/4ths of the team names rhyme! Its fine on paper, but terrible for announcements.
5 What surprised you about the event (positively or negatively?)
The biggest surprise for me was just how much positive feedback I received. Players quite liked the missions and were just genuinely excited to play some interesting games.
6. What advice do you have for other players looking to run their own narrative events?
Keep it simple, but don’t be afraid to try unique things. For example, I tried to keep the missions fairly straightforward (“hold these points” or “do some actions) but then put a twist on it that helps tell your story (“you’re in the jungle, so things may attack you” or “the objectives can be lit on fire”). Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help, either for running things or even just getting ideas from your fellow players. But most of all, remember to have fun with it! After all, fun is why we’re in this hobby in the first place.
