In today’s GW preview we get to take an in-depth dive into the Disciples of the Red Angel. These are the sturdiest and most devoted of the legion and can make up a full army if you so wish. How this works is that it serves almost like an Army of Renown. In order to get these boons you need to not have any mortals including berserkers and jakhals in your army.
This prompts the question of why you would want to do this to which you get several reasons:
- Your Eightbound and Exalted Eightbound get objective secured.
- A unit of possessed in your army gets the Daemonic Infusion ability too:
Brazen Skin seems like an amazing ability and I wonder if we will start seeing possessed in large numbers again. This army also gains access to eight unique stratgems. Including:
Both of these abilities are amazing, especially for only 1 CP each. The ability to pursue will help your Eightbound avoid being shot and might allow you to tangle up new units if your opponent is careless. You also get to use a few custom relics too. The one highlighted in today’s article is:
A decent relic, great against knights or any big units/models that absolutely must die but not a must-have.
It’s interesting to see a return of the Armies of Renown. It does explain why GW opened up the floodgates with their Arks of Omen detachment as it will make supplemental armies much easier to integrate. This likely confirms that 10th ed will be much looser with army detachment rules. Unless they want to invalidate a lot of the armies they will introduce I the next few months (I am assuming here we will get similar special armies in the Arks of Omen books). It would also appear that strategms will likely persist into 10th and might be even more varied than before (especially if Armies of Renown reappear). However, these might be coincidental and might just be proof that all of these books were built around the same time (as was promised). Thus, the book might be a holdover from 9th and not actually indicate anything about 10th.
These types of armies are always fun for narrative players but run the risk of making it more difficult to learn and start playing 40k. These new types of armies need to be carefully explained and balanced alongside the older armies.
