Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to give you a look on what’s happening at LVO from the judge’s side.
If you are reading this the weekend it is released then I am currently knee deep into the 40K championships for the Las Vegas Open. I am writing this article the morning of my departure to Las Vegas so it isn’t really a report of the goings on at the tournament at this moment. I simply won’t have time to write the article in the middle of the event as I am extremely busy, and extremely popular. So this week, having worked at a number of previous 40K championship events for LVO, I can give you a very good idea of the state of the judge staff, or at least me, at this point in the weekend.
Already Walked Several miles
As a judge you tend to walk a lot. When you are judging in a venue as large as the one for the 40K Championships, it is much more walking than normal. Even with over 10 judges there are still a lot of moving parts and so you are constantly walking. On the high end some of us would have walked almost 25miles over the course of the weekend. On the low end we would walk maybe 10-12 miles over the course of the weekend but even that is a low estimate. This year the hall is the largest one we have used yet so I expect those numbers to rise. It is good advice to always have a nice pair of walking shoes for this.
Getting Ready for the Shadow Round
This article is supposed to go live on Saturday morning. If all goes well , it should. Saturday is when things start to get spicy as players are either trying to make the shadow round or to skip it all together. During the course of the event we keep track of how many undefeated we have and try to project and see how many we will have by the end of round 6. While doing all that we also keep an eye on the top tables in case anything comes up we can hopefully respond in a timely manner. As the day goes on we also start prepping for the shadow round. We talk about where we will have, if anyone will be helping Danny, and making sure those judges who are working the shadow round have some food so they aren’t starving while judging.
Same Questions Being Asked
Every year there seem to be a few questions that are asked throughout the tournament. Every year it seems to be a different question and I do not recall the same question being ask in multiple years. Many of the questions are fairly simple and seem like something people should know but you have to remember that the Las Vegas Open attracts players from around the world. Because of this you are dealing with hundreds of different meta and ways that players interpret the rules. Every year I am curious as to what question becomes the one that everyone seems to ask and this year should be no different.
