When the Crannogman Bog Devils, Frozen Shore Hunters, Lysene Pirates and Brazen Beasts were revealed to be on the way, there was also evidence to show that the Greyjoy Attachments 1 and Targaryen Attachments 1 were not far behind them. Whilst we have received some clues to the contents of these unit boxes and their rules, we have heard nothing but the name for the Attachment Boxes. I want to see if we can predict what could be inside.
How Do We Know This?
In November retailers began listing new Martell units with some other units for other factions with the most popular one being looked at was the Asmodee Canada website. An EU retailer had a list of names and codes showing the titles of a few boxes on their way including the Attachment Boxes for Greyjoys and Targaryens. Today we will look at the Greyjoys and what they might bring to the table to shake up list building but check out the Targaryens article released earlier this week.
Contents
All Attachment Boxes have six attachments in them, with Baratheons having seven (probably due to the split loyalties).
With all Attachment Boxes we see the Attachments from the Starter Set be included in the box. Lannister, Starks, and Baratheons all had their two attachments featured in their respective boxes, whereas Night’s Watch and Free Folk only had one attachment in their starters which showed up in their boxes. It is safe to assume that this will be the case for the Greyjoys Box.
Something else I have noticed is that within most attachment boxes there is one attachment which already exists before the box’s release that then receives a resculpt and the rest are new. For example, Lannisters have the Champion of the Faith, Starks have the Crannogman Warden, Night’s Watch has the Watch Recruiter, and Baratheons have the Red Priestess. The Free Folk box is the only one that does not follow this rule and switches it around for one model being new and the rest being resculpts.
Some of the models are for units that exist but without Attachments that came with them, others are for future releases yet to come. Baratheons had the Highgarden Captain and Thorn Watch Sentinel hinting at the future Renly releases, and Lannisters had the Clegane Butcher and Sentinel Enforcer.
So, the box should have:
- Attachment(s) from the Starter Box
- 1 Attachment that already exists
- 3-4 New Attachments
But this could be completely different from what we get due to how much of an anomaly the Free Folk Box is, but also the lack of attachments available to the Greyjoy faction.
Models
Reaver Captain and Warsworn – These two attachments are available in the Starter Set so will very likely be included in the box as resculpts. Most people do not use either attachment so having more of what they do not use is going tobe a waste, let’s hope they are cooler designs. The Warsworn is a great attachment but there are so many named characters that have better rules for Greyjoys that steal the spotlight. Perhaps this will showcase a future change to the models? Maybe the Captain will have a reworked ability, or the Warsworn gains an upgrade?
Drowned Prophet – The only other unnamed attachment comes from the Drowned Men box. 2pts for Resilience is very good and whilst not usable in many other factions that are points demanding, the Greyjoys have plenty of points to spend on the characters and so these guys can and do see play. If Beron was ever to lose his version of Resilience, then these would see an increase in pick rate. I would love a new version of this model that is ceremonially pouring salt water on a Drowned Man. With no other attachment for the alt sculpt contender I do think CMON might not follow this rule and instead skip the Prophet.
Silenced Men – Silenced Men see a lot of play due to their performance on the table and great morale stat. With their pillage ability they can be devastatingly mixed with Bolton characters who have a lot of fun morale abilities. I would like an attachment that would be perfect for Silenced Men’s playstyle which I think has to be a 1pt Order Incite attachment, however seeing how this could be spammed into other units might result in the Silenced Men being overshadowed. Prey On Fear sounds like it would fit well with Euron’s background and thus would almost be a perfect fit for the Silenced Men. I do think we will see the attachment for this unit.
Ironborn Bowmen – The best unit in Greyjoys, and perhaps the game. 4pts for a decent long ranged attack as well some very good stats in combat for range units. They suffer on the defensive front but overall are very good. When you look back over the entire range for ASOIAF, there are very few range units that have had attachments released. Crannogman Wardens are the only ones I could find in this regard. Could we see an Ironborn Bowmen attachment? Sure. Will we see an Ironborn Bowmen Attachment? Unlikely.
Ironborn Trappers – Just like the Ironborn Bowmen, I don’t it is likely, but it is possible that a Trappers Attachment could be a part of this box. The Trappers are the first in a new type of unit that provides a support role with its abilities, adding an attachment intended to be utilised in this unit would be adding more fire to fire. If there was to be an attachment, I would see it as adding more opportunity to the abilities like Adaptive Planning for their pillage.
Ironmakers – The best unit in the Greyjoy’s elite arsenal? For sure. Greyjoys struggle with staying power, they are a glass cannon faction that needs to load the cannon first. Ironmakers are strong from the get-go and increase in survivability when the cannon is loaded. They quickly become one of the most resilient units in the game when they are backed up by the healing of the army. An attachment must happen for this unit equipped with the rule Iron Resolve and Go Down Fighting to make this unit a menace without needing named character support. An Ironmaker attachment must be in this box.
Blacktyde Chosen – There is always one that never gets enough time in the sun. One who is not recognised enough. The Blacktyde Chosen are this for the Greyjoys. Without a pillage mechanic they get left behind not being able to utilise so many of the tactic’s cards. However, they are one of the most resilient units based on their stats whilst bringing a great attacking profile with Martial Training. From the box art we can see the unit in a Shieldwall which I think would be a brilliant rule for the attachment to bring to the table, or even Hold The Line! Or both. I do believe CMON would want to improve this unit in the patch or through the attachments box so it is likely we will see a Blacktyde model.
Future Releases – What have the Greyjoys got to offer for future units?
Ten Towers (Harlaw) – Fantasy Flight Games created the Game of Thrones Card game and have given great ideas through artwork for what you could make in the tabletop game. One of these is the Ten Tower Honour Guard for House Harlaw. I am curious as to what could be next from the Harlaws considering that they are so prominent in the books. Having a Spear and Shield unit might be flavourful for the Greyjoys, and I do think we could see the captain release ahead of it similar to the Highgarden Pikemen release for Baratheons.
Prince of Winterfell – Botleys are quite prominent in the books, with Tristifer taking up most of the show followed by Wex. Wex accompanied Theon on his invasion of the North and is the reason Lord Manderly knows about the Bolton treachery at Winterfell. There were other Botleys that joined them when Theon fought at the Stony Shore and Winterfell. I would love to see a Botley unit to represent this and it would be better to do it earlier to fill out the first few moments from the books.
Goodbrother Cavalry – At the beginning of Feast for Crows, Lord Godobrother brings the news of Balon’s death to Aeron Damphair with his sons alongside them. They all arrive via horseback to Aeron’s disdain. We learn they are the house furthest from the Sea that gains wealth from underground mines. Perhaps we can see a similar design like the Blacktydes with Stark rules with Goodbrothers and Lanniste rules? Either way some greyjoy cavalry would be welcomed with open arms and what way to introduce them but few in number through a solo unit like the Watch Marshal?
Euron/Wynch Alliance – When the Botleys defied Eurons’ rise to power, their lands were taken and given to the first house that aligned with Euron; House Wynch. Whilst not much is known about how they fight or what makes them special, they are now one of the principles bannermen for the Greyjoys and one of the main few that fully support Euron. I want to see Euron’s forces expand within the game and House Wynch could be the avenue to do so. Why doesn’t CMON tease their playstyle with an attachment first.
I don’t think there could be anything else we could predict here other than brand new units made from creative licence, although we have definitely at least reached six characters for the attachments box or even the next as well.
That is my prediction for the Greyjoy Attachments 1 coming soon. Why not prepare for the Greyjoy Attachment box release by devoting yourself to the Drowned God with the Drowned Men box?
And remember, Frontline Gaming sells gaming products at a discount, every day in their webcart!
I would love to see a house Wynch unit. Maybe they could be armed with some form of sickle weapon like their blood moon sigil.
