Hello Everyone,
We are looking at the old Orks and Goblins lineup from Warhammer Fantasy. We will look at what models still exist from the old line, what models can be appropriated from Age of Sigmar, and what options Games Workshop has on hand.
Adapting:
For an army with as many units as the O&G they actually came out of the great purge in an okay spot. For their Core choices, Ork Boyz and Arrer Boyz were lost to the warp but all other choices remain (as soon as the Goblin Wolf Riders are released). Things start to look more grim in the Special slots with losses of chariots, Snotlings, and artillery. Rare units also had similar losses with everything but the Squigs, Trolls and the Spider going away.
The purge also reaped a grim tally of their HQ models with only the Savage Ork Warboss/Big Boss, Goblin Warboss, Shamans, and Wurrzag surviving. This sounds decent until you realize they had 26 Hero or Lord units in their armybook.
Options:
Fortunately, the Orks and Goblins are one of the easiest armies to adapt with Age of Sigmar models. By splitting off the goblins into a separate army, GW has started to give them a lot more options. You now have a ton of new models to choose from when building your force. The losses in the heroes and lords can be overcome with the new units for the Goblins, but the named characters are harder to adapt (especially those on chariots).
The Maw Crusha works okay as a Wyvern replacement although it is very large. For the Core choice,s the Savage Ork kit is great for conversion into Arrer Boyz or regular boyz (you could also try to mix in some 40k orks here too. The biggest challenge will be replacing the artillery and chariots. One option might be to use Killbows and other Kruelboyz units as a stand in (works best for the Doom Diver and Spear Chucka proxy). You can also use some of these models as replacements for chariots (the Marshkrawla and Sludgeraker). These aren’t perfect, but can do the job in a pinch. Furthermore, these models are very cheap right now. All in all though, you don’t need a lot of their missing units and can build a great army without them.
FLG Secondhand Store:
As mentioned we have these units (some still on squares too) available for you to grab at the FLG store:
- Grimgore Ironhide on a square
- Metal Shaman on a square
- Ork Boys
- More Ork Boys
- Black Orks on rounds
- Black Orks on Squares
- More Black Orks on Squares
- Even More Black Orks on Squares
- Boar Chariot – NiB
- Mangler Squigs
Conclusion:
Going into the Old World the Orks and Goblins are not in a bad spot. This army had a wide selection of units in it’s original form but can replace lost options easily. This army has always thrived on kit-bashing and the new models added in Age of Sigmar give you a plethora of new options to choose from. I think there is a space for a clever player to incorporate Kruelboyz models as ork proxies alongside a Goblin force. Not only would this look thematic it would be quite affordable too.
