FLG Helps Prep You for the Old World: Dwarfs

Hi All,
As we continue on in our series of articles on the status of Old World miniatures, it’s time to look at the absolute best friends of our last subject: The Dwarfs

Old GW Range:
Like the High Elves, the Dwarfs have lost a lot of their miniatures in the intervening years. Most of the core melee units are intact (Warriors, Longbeards), some specials too (Hammerers, Gyrocopter and Ironbreakers, Slayer) and even a few rares (Gyrobomber and Irondrakes). They even have some Lords and Heroes available (the Dwarf Lord, Runesmith/Runelord). Unfortunately, this means that many of the more unique units in the army have been lost. The heaviest losses are in the quintessential Dwarf artillery park (your Flame Cannons, Cannons, Bolt Thrower etc.) Furthermore, the lack of Miner units alongside Quarralers and Thunderers means you are locked into a very plodding melee list without a lot of ranged options.

Substitutes:
Sadly, there aren’t as many GW substitutes available to Dwarf players. While the new elven faction in Sigmar has a lot of parallels to the high Elves that is not the same for the Dwarfs. You have some choices in the Fyreslayer range, but they don’t really fill the missing gaps (they have some exception models to use as Lords/Heroes though). If you wanted to get creative, you could use Arkanaut companies as Miners/Rangers and explain their arrival as coming from above rather than below. Grunstock Thunderers could also give you some ranged infantry options (although $50 for five models is a tough pill to swallow). You still lack for artillery choices and will have to look outside of GW to find those models. Fortunately, this gaps has existed for a while and there are a number of 3rd party or 3D printed choices for you to go with.

FLG:
While we don’t have quite as many options as we did for the High Elves. We do have a variety of options (including a cannon) should you be interested!

Well I hope this article has been helpful. I look forward to facing all of those non-gunline lists in the future!
