Happy Thursday everyone! Today’s article is focused on reviewing the Path to Glory rules for the Ossiarch Bonereapers (OBR). These bad boys run around the mortal realms collecting bones and their narrative rules have been well-written to reflect that!
Army Special Rules and Quest:
The OBR get a fun rule that triggers when they kill an enemy unit in melee. You roll a die for each wound the slain unit had on it’s characteristic sheet and on a 2+ you get a Tithe Point. It is important to note this triggers off of units and not models so for a unit of 20 skeleton warriors you would still roll a single die. You can use these points in place of glory points at the end of each battle (although your Tithe Points are reset after every game.)
The OBR quest triggers after you win a major victory and get 10+ Tithe Points. In your next game, during each of your hero phases, you can return a slain model to every unit with a wounds characteristic of 3 or less. This is a nice bonus and ties into their lore well.
Upgrade Table and Territories:
The good news for the OB is that any unit can benefit from their upgrade table. The bad news is that they only work in melee.
- Immortal Legionaries allows you to negate a wound on a 5+ instead of a 6+
- Peerless Warriors: allows your unit to do mortal wounds on a “6” to wound
- Hatred of the Living: allows you to add +1 to wound in combat
All of these are solid options for your melee units (which is most of your army) and these can be devastating if timed correctly. Sadly, they are all linked to the combat phase, capping the number you can use in a single game.
The OBR also get three territories:
- Ancient Battle site: +1 monster or war machine (goes up to +2 when upgraded)
- Shyesian Realmgate: +1 free OBR endless spell. When upgraded this spell can be auto-cast and made impossible to unbind.
- Necropolis Foundations: When upgraded you get +1 glory Point for each unit that wasn’t destroyed during the battle.
- I think these territories are all very strong and very fluffy. The Realmgate is absolutely insane and will reward you if you can roll it.
Summary:
As much as I am not wild about this faction I do think it’s cool to see them get some fun rules. This will be a great patch until they get their 3rd ed. battletome. This rule set also shows how Path to Glory’s core rules can help moderate strong faction abilities. The OBR get really good battle traits yet only one unit can use them at a time. This helps prevent the formation of super-units that mulch anything they come into contact with.
