The SoCal OPEN Hall of Fame (2017-Present)

The SoCal open first launched in 2017 and was the first real big event in Southern California where the Competition is fierce. The Bay Area Open was already an iconic event that has been around since 2010, however the SoCal Open is one of the newer major events in the competitive scene where you can stake your legacy.

Taking place at the Del-Mar Fair Grounds with a view of the Ocean in sunny San Diego, the SoCal Open is a real treat for 40k players with so much space to play and roam around from game to game. With games like Marvel Crisis Protocol, Age of Sigmar, Legion, A Song of Ice and Fire and Warhammer 40,000 the SoCal Open isn’t an event that you want to miss out on.

1st Place – Benjamin Jurek

Ben Jurek, a player on the team Smite Club, is a seasoned Orks player taking first place at the SoCal Open running Goffs. This marks the second time Orks have won at the SoCal open with Logan Heath winning it last year. The Goffs were able to keep up pressure the entire weekend while doing worthwhile trades to continue their aggressive playstyle and scoring. He ended off with 6 wins and 568 Battle Points for an average score of 94 throughout the weekend.

2nd Place – Matthew Green

Matthew Green, a member of Xenos Petting Zoo, grabs the 2nd place title running Tyranids with Hive Fleet Leviathan. Green made his mark piloting his Grey Knights with great success before moving over to Tyranids. Facing against strong opponent’s like Junior Aflleje and Kyle Parry. He ended off with 6 wins and 536 Battle Points for an average score of 89 throughout the weekend.

3rd Place – Scott LaFountain

Scott LaFountain made his mark as a strong Chaos Daemons player who always shows up during the SoCal Open ready to rumble for the top spots. This year he reached 3rd place at the event running Tyranids with Hive Fleet Leviathan, an army that he recently picked up and completely smashed at the open. He ended off with 6 wins and 535 points with an average score of 89 points barely missing out on second place by 1 point.

2021 – Logan Heath

Logan Heath, a member of the team the Xenos Petting Zoo, takes the championship title in 2021 at SoCal Open’s return since restrictions from COVID-19. Heath came in with an Orkz list that crushed the competition where him and his team rallied together to create such an oppressive Orkz list that GW immediately nerfed the faction right afterwards. Heath has since helped elevate XPZ into a larger community of like minded team members that help each other get ready for the next big events. 2019 – Brian Pullen

You might have heard of him from the popular youtube collective Tabletop Titans, however Brian Pullen was first a very strong contender at the SoCal Open. Winning the 2019 event with the T’au Empire as well in what would soon be the Triple Riptide T’au list. He would later move onto creating the Youtube channel, Tabletop Titans innovating the tabletop miniatures content space. You can listen to the podcast 40k Game Changers interviewing Pullen here.

2017-2018 – Brandon Grant

In the first 2 years of the SoCal open, Brandon Grant wins the event running Astra Militarum with each one. In 2018 he was crowned the ITC Champ and was also the 2019 LVO champ. In all, Grant was a nerd legend that solidified his spot in the competitive scene as a master of the Imperial Guard. Ramon Silva wins the Age of Sigmar event running Stormcast Eternals for the team Scal United. Spoiler alert, they made up every placement this year for first, second and third. Without dropping a game Silva won 5 games with a total battle point score of 2630.
