New Units Revealed for Q1 2023! – ASOIAF Miniatures Game

With the Martell release right around the corner, the last of the releases announced by CMON at GAMA are coming to an end. But with this also comes the news of the future releases for the game. Some retailers have begun to list the units planned for release in Q1 of 2023 and this has some exciting news for almost every faction in the game.

Martell Expand to the Stars

Dune Vipers
Starfall Knights
Starfall Outriders
Martell Spearmen

Three new units are coming in Q1 of 2023 for the Martells and the Spearmen from the Starter Set get their individual box. The Dune Vipers were originally the name of the Sunspear Dervishes in the Starter Set as per the descriptions at the GAMA reveals. GAMA showed the Dervishes box separate with artwork of what the Dervishes are now, but the description spoke of a “spear-and-net fighting style” that enemy archers and artillery would fear. It is safe to assume this unit will be a tech unit used to tie down the enemy.

Starfall is the seat of House Dayne. The most notorious fighter in the entirety of ASOIAF’s history belonged to the Kingsguard during Robert’s Rebellion and was Ser Arthur Dayne. I expect that the Dyane units will become the combat choice for the Martells with the Knights, and the outriders will add the cavalry option currently missing from the force. There isn’t too much to say about what these two units could be, but it might indicate what characters we will get in Martell Heroes 3.

Greyjoy Captains

Greyjoy Attachments 1

Greyjoys could do with a new unit but until then the arrival of the attachment box may change the game for them. It is quite likely this boxset will be ignored however due to there already being some great 1pts attachments and majority of the time you will just spend your points on grabbing more units for more activations. Like the other attachment boxes, I expect there will be a mix of Alt Sculpts and new attachments for units present and future. For example, each attachment box saw the attachments from the Starter Sets get Alt Sculpts so expect the Reaver Captain and the Warsworn to appear here. Most boxes had new attachments altogether with only the free folk lacking in new attachments, this was for units without attachments such as the Night’s Watch Ranger Hunters, or attachments that teased new units in the future like the Sentinel Enforcer for the Honour Guard for Lannisters.

The Trappers, Ironmakers, Bowmen, Silenced Men, and Blacktyde Chosen, all do not come with an attachment. I doubt we will see an attachment for the Bowmen and Trappers but Ironmakers, Blacktyde Chosen, and Silenced Men may all see an attachment. Only time will tell what we might see, but one thing is for sure, all the sculpts in the other factions were top tier so the Greyjoys will have some amazing models in this box.

Free Folk Frozen in Awe

Frozen Shore Hunters

A third Frozen Shore unit to release completes the trifecta for this Affiliation. A Chariot (Monster Solo), Cavalry, and Infantry unit with a Commander and an Attachment is very well rounded for a specific theme. I expect based on the Great Walrus’ rules and the Chieftain‘s rules this unit will be incredibly defensive. I do predict that they will work well anywhere in the Free Folk army. But we do not have much more we can go from here.

Targaryen Infantry

Targaryen Attachments 1
Brazen Beasts

Skahaz mo Kandaq is coming in Targaryen Heroes 3, and I believed this was a tease for what was to come for the faction. Thus, I was correct, and the Brazen Beasts are on their way, which are the City Watch of Meereen and are commanded by Skahaz mo Kandaq.

The Brazen Beasts wear brass masks with the faces of animals, and there is a shed load of different animals they have for the masks. Over the masks, they wear dark hoods. Ser Barristan Selmy hates the masks, as he dislikes not knowing who is behind them, and feels that honest men should not hide their faces, so I better not see any of you guys running Barristan in the unit. The Brazen Beasts wear pleated skirts and leather sandals, and many-colored patchwork cloaks to represent the many-colored bricks of Meereen. They are armed with cudgels, staves, spears, and shortswords. So, a very varied description from the books so I truly have no idea what they will be armed with or how they will play, but they will be unique. Let us hope that they do not look ridiculous like the other animal mask wearing unit; Casterly Rock Honour Guard.

Alongside this release, comes the Targaryen Heroes 1. Just like what we have said expect some alt sculpt likely of the KO’s in the Starter Set, and the very sought after Unsullied Officer. We may see some Stormcrow Attachments in the box and perhaps a Brazen Beasts Attachment. We may see something hint at the three fighting companies formed from her freedmen: the Mother’s Men, the Free Brothers, and the Stalwart Shields.

Free Cities Enter the Game

Lysene Sellswords

Last week I wrote an article about my desire for more Neutral units that do not link to a specific faction that could uphold the title of actually being Neutral. The mercantile cities of Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh are protected by hired sellswords and thus I suggested that a unit named Free City Mercenaries might be something we could see. CMON instantly saw my request and with much haste made the Lysene Sellsowrds and mass produced them for release in 2023. Seeing that this is just Mercenaries from Lys makes me think we could have a separate unit for Myr and Tyrosh in the future, and through each of these units you will get the personality of these cities. I cannot wait to see what they look like, but this might indicate a character’s much desired arrival; Salladhor Saan the notorious Lysene pirate, sellsail, smuggler, trader, and banker.

We may see Tyroshi Sellswords soon since they did appear in the War of the Five Kings. During the Battle of the Camps, the Tyroshi sellsword and the freeriders under his command in the camp south of the Red Fork dip their banners and defect to the army of northmen and rivermen led by Robb Stark when they see that the other two camps have been overrun. Ser Forley Prester leads the safe retreat of four thousand loyal men. However, George R. R. Martin did say he forgot about these guys in future novels so let us hope CMON don’t forget about them.

Bog Ambush

Crannogman Bog Devils

At long last House Reed gets a new unit. This faction has never had much of a hold as a pure Reed force until now. As mentioned in the Affiliation article I did not too long ago, the Reed faction is amazing with multiple Characters and Attachments spreading the flavour of the force perfectly. The only downside was there was only one unit unique to them that has not had too much limelight. With the Crannogman Survivalist making his debut in the Attachments box it was only a matter of time until the unit he belonged to would appear. With the attachment having Elusive Escape, we could probably gather that the Bog Devil unit will have a retreat mechanic of some kind. There is not anything else to go off here, but the name Bog Devil was coined by Ironborn so maybe they will be designed to be anti-Greyjoy in a way.

That is all that was revealed from some of the retailers for early 2023, however many countries have different release schedules due to distribution constraints so it is uncertain when these will make it onto your doorstep. Which unit are you most excited for?
