Hey everybody! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to talk about events that have nothing, ok almost nothing, to do with Games Workshop games.
I love going to tournaments, either as a judge or player. This should be evident by the many tournaments I have been to over the years. As much as I enjoy attending these events there are times when I want to see other parts of the event or even want to attend an event that wasn’t about Games Workshop at all. Before falling into the universes of Games Workshop, I would attend conventions that just played games. This week here are a few reasons that you may want to attend a non-Games Workshop oriented event.
Other Ways of Playing GW Games
I know that many reading this play in a lot of tournaments but there are people who play the game outside of a tournament setting. These conventions may not have a tournament going on but they do have Games workshop games being played. In my local convention there are a number of Games Workshop games being played and almost all of them allow for people to just walk up and play. You may see an Apocalypse game being played, Blood Bowl, Kill Team or even lord of the Rings games. Someone may even be playing the various Warhammer or 40k roleplaying games or an old GW game that is no longer in print. If you are interested in some of the specialists game, both in print and out of print, then going to a geral gaming convention is an easy way to get introduced to these games.
New Games to Play
As much as I play Games Workshop games there are a lot of other games out there. The nice thing about a convention is that you are able to try out other games and game systems without having to buy in. I’ve played other tabletop miniature games from historical to fantasy and sci-fi, role playing games and board games. Some conventions even have areas where people are playtesting their games. This allows you to be a part of something and get some experience on how games are developed and playtested. Speaking of developers, many times game conventions have developers attending so you could easily speak with the creators of some of your favorite games.
New Friends that don’t play GW games
this is not to say that you only have friends that only play Games Workshop games but going to a game agnostic convention there is a greater chance to meet and befriend new people that can introduce you to a whole new world of games. This isn’t to say that you will leave 40K or Age of Sigmar for another game system but that it will open your mind to other ways to play and other types of games. Who knows, you may even be able to get those people to also start playing Games Workshop games and increase your player pool.
