Last week saw the Great Canadian Open took place, with a great turnout of 18 players. The event took place in EY Centre in Ottawa and the legend Ariakas organising an awesome event.. The 1-day 4-game event saw many factions fight for the win but only one army got 4 wins. Thank you to ASOIAF-Stats.com for providing all the stats for the tournament so we can peek into the lists and games. Let us check out some of the top performers.

Balerog brought Tywin Lannister for three games and Addam Marbrand for the last. They tied in the first game and won on points against Mance Rayder. They had a close game Brynden Tully and lost to Greatjon Umber. I love the Tywin list evoking Rohan themes with mass cavalry, but dam does it hurt to see Tywin backed by Poor Fellows. The Addam Marbrand list was not Warrior’s Sons spam and had varied units like Pyromancers and Golden Company Swordsmen. I would love to have played against the cavalry list for its thematics. Congrats Balerog for taking fifth place!

There is only a few differences between the lists so we known AlexGerm brought Queen’s Men spam for every fight. Everyone who looks at a Queen’s Men unit knows it isn’t being destroyed. When you see three of tem backed by Attachments to buff the survivability, then there is no point fighiting. AlexGerm lost against the person who came first who brought a Robb Stark list. The Robb player played to the mission with fast moving units that are backed up by retreat abilities to make sure they hold the objective. The Queen’s Men could not catch the Stark player and was out scored. In all other games these lists slaughtered through their opponents due to them being an immovable wall. Congrats on fourth place!

Mujtaback brought Grey Worm for three games and Khal Drogo for their last game. They won 3 games and lost to the Axell Florent list prior. They did well against all opponents securing a victory safely for each game but lost dramatically to the Queen’s Men. They brought Grey Worm against Asha Greyjoy, Eldon Estermont, and Axell Florent, then Drogo against Donal Noye. My favourite of the two lists is the Unsullied led by Grey Worm, seeing units of Unsullied led by Grey Worm and backed by some of Danerys’ forces is great, especially theme meme of Freedmen. Congrats on third place!

Sean brought Mance Rayder for all four of their games. Ariakas mentioned that Sean was unfortunetly late to the tournament resulting in him being flustered for the first game and some of the subsequent ones. Sean’s opponents and Ariakas mentioned this was likely the reason why they lost the first game agaisnt Tywin Lannister. However, this lost was only due to a draw on objective points resulting in the person who had most points on the board winning, which went to the Lannisters. Sean’s next two games against two different Jon Snow players went smoothly, and the last game against Donal Noye was really close. My favourite list is the new Varamyr Commander even though it didn’t see the table here, but loved the inclusion of Borroq as one of my favourite models in the game. Congrats on second place!

EvilMorty brought Greatjon Umber for three of their games and Robb Stark for the last one against the Axell Florent Queen’s Men list. They fouhgt smoothly against Baelor Blacktyde and Tywin Lannister but had a close game against a Oberyn Martell list which had 4 NCUs! What craziness to ses Martells so soon in tournaments but with a game changer like the amount of NCUs. We’ve already talked about how EvilMorty managed to overcome the impossible force of the Queen’s Men so there isn’t much more to say about the final fight. Cavalry focused lists are common with Starks but I have to give some merit to the Robb list as it is so diverse and has some combinations I have never seen. Congrats on taking first place!
Well done to everyone who went to the event, it sounded like everyone had a lot of fun. A big well done to Ariakas for organising the event for people in Canada. I do hope to see more Opens in the future.
