Happy Friday All!
This is the next installment of my series about trying to crush everyone else create a fun narrative at the NOVA Open narrative event. Friends….I wish I could say that this week was a good week but it was very trying. Now that my Chaos Space Marine codex has arrived I discovered my previous plan of running a combined Iron Warriors/Night Lords force would be terrible as they would both lose their Legion traits (at least the best I could tell reading the army construction rules). In addition, I finally got to see some of the stipulations around the list construction rules for the event and was a little disappointed to only see players getting 5 RP to spread over three roster permutations.
The organizers also insisted that if one roster had a detachment with a different faction (i.e. Imperial Knights) then all rosters must have one detachment with that keyword. Basically, if you wanted to take a knight in one list, your other two must contain a knight of some sort as well. While I appreciate the need for balance, this does torpedo my idea of bringing a solo knight for one of my list options. This, honestly, might be a good thing as it really narrows down which units you want to bring. Have too little overlap between options and you will spread your buffs too thinly. Too much, and there won’t be much difference in your lists.
Previous Week’s Goals:
- Clear out my painting backlog of non event models
- Assemble and prime all new units
- Develop my third army roster draft.
I was able to clear out my painting backlog (the immediate stuff anyway. My Blood Slaughterers are assembled, alongside everything but the Lord Discordant (who just arrived in the mail). I would like to note that immediately after purchasing my Disco Lord FLG posted a used one for half the cost in the Secondhand Store ….. – _ –
As you can guess my list process is still in chaos. I am still uneasy using Forge World units as I do not know when the FAQ will come out and if it will make any changes. NOVA has a rule that if you bring any units with a mark you must pay RP for them and the Blood Slaughterers would eat up 60% of my RP if they got the keyword. I should just ask the organizer if they have a cutoff point for the FAQ dropping/ make a back up set of lists.
Army Prep:
So we will be focusing on my list construction woes for right now. I am envisioning three permutations of the same list that I have affectionately labelled the following:
- Big Kahunas
- Medium Kahunas
- No Kahunas
While the dream of a joint IW/NL force is dead, there isn’t anything preventing me from painting the Disco Lord like an Iron Warrior for fluff’s sake. Thus I can take the same units I was planning on and just switch their Legion tag. For my Big Kahunas list I am thinking about forming the core of the army around a Greater Brass Scorpion, the Blood Slaughterers and a small infantry contingent. The list will be pretty fast and the Disco Lord can support the Daemon Engine rush. Medium Kahunas will have just the Disco Lord and the Slaughterers with a larger infantry component, including some Chosen in a Termite Drill. Lastly No Kahunas will have no Disco Lord or Daemon Engines and be a infantry/bike heavy force. I lose out on some synergy with the Disco Lord not being in every list but I will keep my main champion around which should help. My next challenge is to figure out the details and develop some 1500 point lists. I also need to ask the organizers about if the 1500 lists can include smaller versions of the units in the 2k rosters or if we need to have a completely different set of unit sheets.
Goals ahead of the next update:
- Firm up the details about the 2k rosters.
- Draft the 1500 rosters.
- Assemble and prime the core units (Blood Slaughterers, Disco Lord, Termite, etc.)
- Ask organizers about FAQ cutoff and unit sizes between games.
- Take some pictures to share of the completed units!
See you all in a week!
