Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to talk about what I learned about my army from the first couple outings.
As with many of you, I am still trying to figure out what units to take in the new Chaos Space marine army. I have already played a few games and have a rough idea of how I want to play the army. I must say that I am already enjoying how the army plays and some of the tricks you can play with the stratagems and certain Legion traits. Although I am having fun with the army, there are still a few things that I need to keep in mind with the army and I was surprised by a couple of things. This week I will talk about a few of the things I have noticed with the codex after playing a few games.
Cult troops are actually useful
You may or may not know this but I have a full Thousand Sons army and a full Death Guard army. I enjoy the fact that I can include the basic troops in my army. There is the downside that you lose all your FACTION keywords, along with some of the bonuses that the army would normally give them, but there is still some good about the units. The Rubric marines and Plague marines still keep their KEYWORDS keywords so they are still considered CORE. This allows them to benefit from any buffs that apply to units with the CORE keyword. This means that your Chaos Lords and special character *cough* Abaddon *cough* will be able to buff them up when needed and many stratagems or special rules that apply to CORE units only can be used on them. I am certainly having at least 1 god specific unit in most armies I build.
I still need to protect Abaddon
It is really easy to get caught up in all the special rules and abilities that Abaddon has with him. In many ways he seem invincible, and some games he is, but he can still die in a turn against certain armies. I have already lost him early in game because of bad model placement on my part with him or a nearby unit. I have to be more cognizant of what my opponent’s army can do and in what phases. If they can damage him in all the phases I need to be more careful with him. If they only have 1 or two phases where they can hurt him, then I could be more aggressive with him. In any case I need to be sure that he has bodies nearby to protect him.
Abaddon is a beast
From seeing the preview of his stats right before the book was released I knew he was going to be good but I didn’t realize just how good he is. One of the good things about him is that he can buff just about every other Legion in the Chaos Space marine book, and Black Legion just gets extra bonuses if he buffs them. That is fun and puts him inline with other special characters in the game. The one thing I am enjoying is the sheer damage output he has. In one game he one shot an Imperial knight that was at full health by doing 40 wounds. It was from 11 attacks (8 +d3) that exploded into an additional 2 hits, then hitting and wounding 11 times along with rolling 3d3 mortal wounds with the sword. Add to the fact that he still has the INFANTRY keyword, even being as big of a model that he is. I am just doing the Kool-Aid man through all the breachable terrain on the table. OH YEAH!
