GW Grognard: Blasts from the Past, PT2

Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here for another jaunt down memory lane!

With the Horus Heresy being released and everyone all excited about, there are many times when I think about how things used to be. Please don’t make fun as it will happen to you too someday. Years from now you will be talking about the wonky rules and fluff from 9th edition while learning how to play 29th edition 40K. that being said there are a few things from the fluff and games that i do miss and wish to make a comeback. I am not sure if they ever will but seeing how even Squats are making a return after so many years I don’t see a reason why these things can’t. So this week we will have a look at a few things that should make a comeback, in my opinion.

Creating Your Own Pantheon

Back in the early days of Rogue Trader there was a lot of customization in the game. You could have anything and everything in the game. In the Lost and the Damned book, in addition to learning about Nurgle and Tzeentch, you were able to create your own pantheon of chaos gods. This allowed you to create custom daemons for your army and allowed you to go crazy with the stats and attributes for your pantheon’s daemons. We all know there is more going on in the Warp than the 4 chaos gods and this allowed you to explore that. Although, having seen some of the models that people have made for Slaneesh, it actually may not be a good idea.

Sensei and Star Child Storyline

Unlike today’s fluff, at least as far as we know, the Emperor actually had kids over the millennia of his existence. These were called Sensei and were very important to the rebirth of the Emperor as the Star Child. At the time, when the Emperor died to Horus, his essence was in the warp as the Star Child. This Star Child was waiting in the warp to be reborn. There was even a sect in the Inquisitors that were working for this rebirth. The fact that it involved killing all the Sensei didn’t concern them at all. Games Workshop can easily incorporate this storyline back into the fluff with different factions trying to prevent or help the rebirth of the Emperor of Mankind.

Bring Back the D1000 Charts

Who doesn’t like looking up a lot of charts? The recent editions have gotten rid of a number of charts that we used to use. We get some of them back if you play the new Horus Heresy but they are gone, for the most part. Even with the charts they are limited to what you have as most recent options only go as high as D66. Not even a proper D100. Rolling a chart that uses a D1000 gives you a lot of options. You can never have too many options, right? You look at all the stratagems that give players all kinds of options. Actually don’t look at that since players usually only use a handful of their stratagems. Besides who doesn’t like rolling giant dice to determine the D1000 result?

That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed the article. Let me know what you think, and what old rules or fluff you want to come back, in the comments section below. Don’t forget to visit our Facebook, Twitch, and Patreon pages to stay up to date on what we’re up to and when episodes drop!
