GW Grognard: Seems to be Better

Hey everyone! Adam , from TFG Radio, here to talk about about 40K’s long lost brother, 30K.

I have always been Horus Heresy curious. I started playing Games Workshop games with the 1st edition epic Space Marine and that was all about the Horus Heresy. other than that there was very little Horus Heresy for me to play. Once Horus Heresy became a series of books and a game, I was really excited to replay the battles of the Heresy. Unfortunately the cost of the game kept me from really diving in to the game. What you may not have noticed about me is that if I get into something, I go all in, so it would have been super expensive for me to get into the game. With the advent of the new edition and having a lot of the models moving to plastic, it is finally time for me to jump into 30K. I recently watched a few videos and articles about the new rules and it has peaked my interest. This week I will talk about a few of the rules that have piqued my interest.

Reactions

This is interesting and seems like something I would like to see in the next edition of 40K. Reactions are basically actions you can take during your opponent’s turn. There used to be something like this back in 2nd edition where you could react to your enemy’s movement. Funny enough, it was called “overwatch” and players could sometimes spend the whole game with both sides in “overwatch” , afraid to move. The new reaction system seems well thought out and it seems each legion has their own reaction. I have high hopes for this mechanic.

Terminators actually being hard to kill

The deadliness of the current edition of 40K is legit. Not very many things are built to survive if left out of the open. I love terminators in the lore because they represent so much as the elite of an elite force. Unfortunately most terminators just fall away as easily as a guardsman or cultist. They are not properly represented like the fluff on the table or even how they were in previous editions of the game. From what I can tell, in 30K they seem to be a little bit more survivable as they get a reroll to their armour save from weapons that allow an armour save. I would love this in 40K as it would very much mitigate some unlucky dice rolls when making save and could maybe help make marine and chaos marine armies more viable. This is another thing I would like to see in 40K.

Return of the Toughness Chart

I admit this is nostalgia talking but I kind of miss the days of not being able to harm a unit if it’s toughness was too high. Being able to wound someone no matter the toughness has made a lot of vehicles worthless. Even though you need a 6 to wound, if you throw enough shot at a unit it won’t matter what the toughness is. It is part of the reason you don’t see a lot of vehicles and why Knights have a tough time. I look forward to games where I need to bring actual anti-tank weapons to deal with , surprise, tanks and not just a mass of bolter shots. I’m sure once I start playing I will remember why I hated it before, but until then I look forward to using my Land Raiders and other tanks that have been sitting pn my shelf gathering dust since 8th edition.
