The Problem and The Greatness of NEW Codexes

The current meta of Warhammer 40k can be very frustrating and bland considering T’au and Custodes are reigning supreme it’s almost like deja vu with how dominant Drukhari and Admech were for all of last year, but in the wake of it all are what I would consider amazing codexes.

As much trouble as we’re going through, I just want to take some time to really appreciate how great the some of the new codexes are in playstyle and depth. Out of all the codexes that have come out so far, there have been some great and not so great codexes but my favorites are: Genestealer Cults, Adeptus Mechanicus, Drukhari, Thousand Sons, Aeldari, T’au and Death Guard. I’ve also heard the Sisters codex is good, but I’ve read that codex multiple times and still brain fart over it.

These codexes are great in terms of enjoyment and depth of their books where you constantly feel like you have a way to play viably while still being fluffy and that’s simply put, awesome. Although T’au and Custodes are reigning supreme, the codexes that GW have been putting out should be applauded for how narratively driven these recent books have been. Genestealer Cults for example, although not meta breaking – have a book that feels healthy with units that can vary depending on how you’re feeling for the day.

This is huge when you look at another faction like let’s say Grey Knights, who really only have a handful of viable units and only 1 or 2 different subfactions that are decent enough to support those handful of units (Nemesis Dreadknights and Interceptors). Sure you can take some Paladins or Terminators if you’re feeling spicy, but even then Paladins don’t get bonuses from their Bretheren detachments so you’re just basically playing with their statlines and that’s pretty much it.

Whereas with Genestealer Cults, you can run all kind of crazy things in all kinds of different hive cult detachments and upgrade the units that you want to perform well. The depth of the codex is deep and it’s what’s going to keep driving me to read up on them on a regular basis.

Even the new T’au codex feels fleshed out. Yes, you could spam Crisis Battlesuits – but there’s also viability in the Riptide, Broadsides, Kroot spam, Devilfish and Fire Warriors or Breachers, Hero Hammer and the list goes on and on. More importantly when playing T’au, it feels like how T’au should play: fast moving gunship battlesuits.

Death Guard, even though hit with nerfs, still somehow finds ways to survive while still being thematic as a slow moving army that excels in resilience above all else, or you could run with more decayed zombies running their Army of Renown even though Poxwalkers took a points hike in the recent Chapter Approved.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that the Meta is healthy – I’m just saying that I enjoy the books that GW has been putting out and I’m sure the people who play the factions are still happy about their codex and all the tools they have at their disposal.

Hopefully GW sticks to this plan of attack when it comes to writing new Codexes because for what it’s worth, I’m enjoying how cool they’re making these armies feel when playing them on the tabletop.
