**Thought of the Day**
A wise man learns from the deaths of others.
Welcome to part two of our weekly two part article series covering weekly meta changes and tournament results. Lists, data, and all stats are based on information pulled from either Best Coast Pairings, Down Under Pairings, or tabletop to. If you want to make sure your event is included in this weekly article series toss me an email at legiotitanicus at gmail dot com and I’ll make sure that I add it to my list for analysis during the week. I will also be reaching out to tournament organizers (TO’s) for event winner’s email addresses moving forward (or if you win at a GT level event let me know!).
Guest Writer Nathan H.
This week we had 11 GT or larger events taking place according to BCP, DUP, and Tabletop TO (Qualifying events had at least 28 participants):
- Cherokee
- Battle in the Bush
- Down Under 40k
- Kent Wargames
- Bembel Clash
- Broadsword
- Leodis
- Attrition
- Medhammer
- Iron Cage
- Pecking Order
In today’s article we will be covering overall meta status and the following events:
You can find coverage of this week’s other seven tournaments in tomorrow’s article. Because today we’re going to be talking about a lot of stats analysis.
Note: There will be no player Q&A’s this week, we will restart that this soon as soon as I figure out a better format for it especially with us getting up into the 10+ tournaments per weekend range. Sorry you won’t get random messages from me, but also congratulations to this week’s winners for the same reason.
Now onto some tournament results

So, I’ve updated this table again to contextualize the data a bit more when I talk about Top 10’s and Top 4’s for various factions. Let me know if you have complaints or suggestions! However, when we look at this data we see something I find modestly troubling at the top of the meta which is we have Custodes (who this weekend represented 11% of the meta) taking 29 of the 110 top 10 slots this weekend, which puts them at nearly 26.4% of top 10’s about a 2 times overrepresentation. They also make up 25% of the top 4’s. For T’au Empire the data is also similar situation with them taking 19 of the top 10’s (2.16 over representation) but more intriguingly they convert about two thirds of their armies from top 10 to top 4, giving them 32% of top 4’s and a 4.55 times overrepresentation at the top of tournaments this weekend. I know by this point you’re probably wanting me to stop talking about Custodes/T’au and to talk about something else for a moment so I will, but then we will come back around again to place some of this weekly data into historical context.
Interestingly we did see Tyranids stand back up this week with 12 Top 10’s and Orks with 9 Top 10’s and a GT win. Necrons also pulled out a GT win this last weekend. There are some interesting things happening in this meta even while it’s unhealthy.
Now we’re going to dive into some more data including win percentages and some historical data that I’ve been able to look at thanks to Curie (who manages the dataset) and also Cliff. We work together in a sort of stats-luminati, well if we actually controlled anything or had any power whatsoever.
Faction | # Players | % Rep | Win Rate |
T’au Empire | 49 | 9.1% | 69.5% |
Adeptus Custodes | 64 | 11.9% | 68.4% |
Drukhari | 19 | 3.5% | 56.3% |
Cult Mechanicus | 9 | 1.7% | 54.4% |
Tyranids | 32 | 5.9% | 54.1% |
This is the top 5 win-rates for factions for factions with 9+ players this weekend (low player number messes with the data. We can see that T’au and Custodes continue doing well with win-rates just below 70% with Drukhari, Cult Mechanicus and Tyranids coming up behind them at 54-56% win rates (probably closer to where we’d like balance to be (generally the thought is win rates of 45-55% is where balance would be best). When we look at the month as a whole this is what we see:
Faction | # Players | % Rep | Win Rate |
Adeptus Custodes | 178 | 12.9% | 69.4% |
T’au Empire | 114 | 8.2% | 67.3% |
Drukhari | 77 | 5.6% | 55.7% |
Harlequins | 11 | 0.8% | 55.3% |
Forces of the Hive Mind | 14 | 1.0% | 53.8% |
Tyranids | 79 | 5.7% | 53.4% |
Genestealer Cult | 51 | 3.7% | 50.6% |
Aeldari | 18 | 1.3% | 50.0% |
That means we have maintained win rates of close to 70% for Custodes and T’au across the month of February (even considering that first week where T’au didn’t have a new book). With the drop between those two books and the next one being a 12% drop to Drukhari in overall win-rate, that’s a pretty big jump. After that we have only five factions over a 50% win-rate for the month: Drukhari, Harlequins, Forces of the Hive Mind, Tyranids, and Genestealer Cult with three of those coming from the same umbrella faction. It’s also interesting to note that Custodes and T’au make up significantly larger portions of the meta than these factions with only Tyranids and Drukhari approaching their numbers (well being a bit over half the representation of T’au and close to half of the representation of Custodes). Now this normally would already be considered a problem as we have extremely powerful armies that are also very common in the meta, but when you remove the Custodes and T’au Empire matches into one another you get the win-rate into the field and it’s pretty staggering: T’au have a 73.2% win rate into the field and Custodes have a 72.5% win rate into the field across February. That means if you aren’t playing either Custodes or T’au you’re going to need to be at the top of your game.
Now for some historical notes I like to call my Cliff’s Notes (as they came from fellow stats-luminati and 40K fight club podcast member Cliff):
- Custodes are Tau both now have sustained win rates into the rest of the field of 70%+
- Combined, their faction representation is more than triple that of Iron Hands at its immediate peak following release (think triple repulsor executioners).
- Their win rates are similar to that of dark technomancer liquifiers at release
Games | Win% | Loss% | |
Release Iron Hands | 420 | 68% | 29% |
Release Dark Eldar | 154 | 73% | 27% |
Adeptus Custodes | 680 | 72% | 27% |
T’au Empire | 440 | 73% | 27% |
These two books are on par with recent books that were completely broken upon release, so hopefully we see a response from GW soon to balance these especially given that when you look at the total Game numbers we only 154 games with Dark Eldar pre-liquifier nerf and have already surpassed the number of games played with Release Iron Hands before they received their first nerfs.
TLDR
We’re hitting a critical mass point in the meta that needs to be addressed.
Cherokee Open
My Predictions for the event:
– Tau and Custodes make up the majority of Day 3 Armies
– A Custodes player wins
– No Tyranids players make it to Day 3
– Jack Harpster or Ryan Snyder take the trophy
On the prediction front I did alright this time around predicting the winner of the event and also the makeup of the top 8 for day 3 though honestly for the second prediction I think that’s not the most difficult thing. I’ll do these again for the next big FLGN event, maybe I’ll even track how well I do at predicting things and you all can make fun of me for not being right all the time. Ok, onto the coverage.

Key Features
- A Farsight Enclaves Allied world gives you most of the benefits of being a Farsight Enclaves list without the downside of being unable to take Ethereals who are a very important buffing unit in a lot of T’au Empire lists.
- Farsight Enclaves gives you a markerlight if you’re within 12” of an enemy unit (+1 to hit for those not in the know). It also gives you access to a wound re-roll when you shoot. Drop Zone Clear is also a very good stratagem in Crisis Suit heavy lists as it gives a unit deploying from deep strike/reserves the ability to reroll all their hit rolls for 2/3CP depending on unit size. In a list featuring around 16 crisis suits you’ve got a quite a few options for things to drop in and cause havoc to your opponent.
- Commander Shadowsun provides chapter master style rerolls to <core> units and also has a normal captain reroll aura for <Core>. Although the Exemplar of the Kauyon doesn’t benefit this army in particular.
- Two T’au Commanders feature in this list. One with the Be’gel hunting plate giving +1 armor save and a 5++ (paired with the iridium gives him a 1+). Precision of the Hunter gives full wound and hit rerolls, and the Thermoneutronic Projector prototype system gives a boosted flamer with D6+2 S4 DP2 D2 at range and as extra attacks in melee meaning this commander can operate both in melee and at range quite nicely to assassinate characters or to bake targets. Triple Cyclic Ion Blasters also gives you 9 S7 AP2 D1 shots or S8 AP2 D2 shots if you choose to overcharge (which why wouldn’t you with full rerolls to hit and wound?) The second commander comes with Exemplar of the Montka giving you the ability to nominate a unit to have wound rerolls when within 12” of an enemy unit, the DW-02 protoype system gives you an 8 shot S6 AP1 D1 gun that prevents your opponent from a ignoring wounds, the Solid Image Projection relic lets you ignore the first failed save and provides your commander with a 4++. The coldstar commander can also go into reserves and then be set up again 9” away from enemy units, and boost an advance roll for a unit by 8” within 9” of the commander, which gives you a significant boost to your mobility.
- There are 4 units of crisis suits in this army, one brick of crisis suits with airburst fragmentation projectors which is a 24” ignore LOS D6 S4 AP1 D1 gun. This unit has each with 2 of these meaning it can put out 10D6 ignore LOS shots when it shoots and Target Lock means your opponent can’t have the benefit of light cover as well. The second unit has all shield generators (meaning they have a 4++) and then each has plasma rifles and cyclic ion blasters for direct fire while being exceptionally durable as well.
- Oh, and the Ethereal has two powers: Sense of Stone (pick a unit within 6” to get a 5+ FNP and Wisdom of the Guides (Gain 1 CP) (Authors Note: The loophole of an FSE allied world taking Ethereals grinds my gears but it’s fine, everything is fine).
TLDR
- Extremely mobile, extremely shooty, more durable than meets the eye, with lots of artillery, and with at least one T’au unit that can go into melee and do well.

Key Features
- Emperor’s Chosen provide a nice bit of flexibility and also let you deal with major weaknesses otherwise present in Custodes list by giving them a 4+ FNP against mortal wounds, effectively letting them take their invulnerable save against mortal wounds. They also give you a pocket reroll you can use to help alleviate rolling ones. You can also cheekily place a unit from your army into another shield host for a turn, letting say something going into combat be shadowkeepers and taking an attack away from your opponent’s combat unit.
- Trajann ‘Auto-include’ Valoris
- The Just the Tip Bike Captain, Superior Creation gives you a 5+ FNP, Tip of the Spear gives you rerolls that your bike captain will very much enjoy, Auric Exemplar gives them additional attacks as they kill models (up to 4). The major difference here being that they gave them the Auric Aquilas instead of the Castellan’s mark, which means they can reroll charges and can double it’s move characteristic during the movement phase if you give up shooting and charging that turn.
- 3 Wardens provide bodyguard for the slower character in this list, and provides some extra infantry for holding objectives alongside the one unit of custodes guard with spears.
- The reason those sections are running so slim is because there are 15 bikes in this list all with salvo launchers (those are meltas but with D3+3 damage) That’s a lot of fast, durable, hard punching, and hard shooting models for an opponent to deal with.
TLDR
- Golden Stuff in Emperor’s Chosen, but with 15 Bikes! This list is aggressive and fast moving with lots of bikes and lots of melta fire.

Key Features
- Realspace Raids give some interesting benefits, mostly it lets your Archon provide a captain style reroll aura (that’s reroll 1’s to hit) for <core> units near him. The realspace raid also lets you keep all your special benefits for your coven, cult, and kabal. That means your Prophets have transhuman, your Black Heart has +1 to PFP and a pocket reroll to hit, and the Strife units have fight first and +1 to charge if they’re the first unit in.
- The Archon here has Hatred Eternal giving him full hit and wound rerolls, and then the Djinn Blade gives him 7 S4 AP3 D3 attacks. The upgrade also gives a once per game fight twice.
- The Haemonculus has the upgrade Diabolical Soothsayer giving him a choice of two different stats buffs before the game starts, the Vexator Maks also provides a source of fight last and ignore overwatch that replaces Ancient Evil in this list. The upgrade also lets them stand up if they die on a 2+ once per game.
- The Succubus has your standard Whip/Competitive Edge goodness that combines with Adrenalight (+1 A on the charge) nicely giving them the ability to blend most infantry units and really non-vehicle units provided they don’t have damage reduction abilities.
- The characters are backed by 11 Grotesques providing the backbone of the army, which are still quite durable especially if the Haemionculus is near them for the +1 toughness buff, the Prophets Sins Writ Large stratagem lets them pop full rerolls to hit (which can also go with full wound rerolls as well).
- A unit of Trueborn and 3 Raiders provide the shooting in the list giving this list 4 Dark Lance Shots, some Blaster shots, and some rapid fire poison (which can be nice when combined with splinter racks giving them full rapid fire at 24”).
- Three units of wracks and a unit of haemoxytes provide solid objective holders as well, especially with haemoxytes having +1 to their invulnerable save and ignoring the first failed save each phase.
TLDR
- A Realspace Raid featuring Drukhari Goodstuff with Coven Thicc-ish Stuff

Key Features
- Freebooterz Speed Mob, which means we’ve got access to Freebooterz stratagems like Get da Loot where you can make a unit in you army obsec (quite useful really). Speed mob also gives some nice befits, you get obsec bikes, +1 to attacks on the charge, ignore penalties for advancing, and you get a 6++ that turns into a 5++ if you advanced that turn. You also get some very shiny stratagems like Attack Out O Da Sun which lets you remove a Deffkoptas unit at the end of the turn and deep strike it during your next movement phase.
- Leading the list we’ve got a Warboss on Warbike with Brutal But Kunnin (which lets you reroll attacks that don’t hit the damage step) and Da Killa Klaw relic, which is a flat 3D no hit penalty power klaw. Combined together this makes for a very killy character on the charge.
- In the other detachment we’ve got a Defkilla Wartrike with Speed King, which gives Speed Freeks units (your whole army essentially) re-roll wound rolls of 1 and then he’s also got the Da Badskull Banna relic which removes obsec from enemy units within 6” which when combined with the Freebooterz stratagem makes your army quite capable of stealing objectives and holding objectives even if your opponent starts dumping obsec onto your objectives (and when you’re Orks they’re really all your objectives, right?)
- 3 units of warbikers provide the fast-moving obsec base of this list, and they’re quite durable with the invuln from Speed Mobs, -1 to hit, and being T5 3W. On a Waagh turn they can also put out quite a bit of firepower being armed with two Dakka 5/3 guns that are S5 AP0 D1 means that even with Ork ballistic skill you’ll hit something.
- The list also has 5 Deffkoptas which put out hurt at range, which is further boosted by being Boom Boyz which gives their blast weapons an extra AP. That means this unit is putting out 10D3 S8 AP3 D3 Blast shots with their Kopta rokkits. That’s a lot of firepower on a unit that can then bounce off the table to keep you from engaging it.
- The list is capped off with Wazbom Blasta jets providing their fun lottery cannons to the mix, alongside some ignore los shooting from Rukkatrukk Squigbuggies, and some more missiles (because there is never enough Dakka) from a squad of Megatrakk Scrapjets.
TLDR
- That’s a whole lotta dakka, almost makes you wonder if you can have more of it but that’s more of a question for an Ork philosopher or mekboy. This army moves fast and lays out the hurt using mechanized mischief.
