**Thought of the Day**
Big guns never tire.
Welcome to part two of our weekly two part article series covering weekly meta changes and tournament results. Lists, data, and all stats are based on information pulled from either Best Coast Pairings, Down Under Pairings, or tabletop to. If you want to make sure your event is included in this weekly article series toss me an email at legiotitanicus at gmail dot com and I’ll make sure that I add it to my list for analysis during the week. I will also be reaching out to tournament organizers (TO’s) for event winner’s email addresses moving forward (or if you win at a GT level event let me know!).
Guest Writer Nathan H.
This week we had 4 GT or larger events taking place according to BCP, DUP, and Tabletop TO (Qualifying events had at least 28 participants):
- Beachhead Brawl
- West of Scotland
- Norcal Open
- The 36 Chambers
In today’s article we will be covering overall meta status and the following events:
You can find coverage of this week’s other tournaments in yesterday’s article.
Note: There will be no player Q&A’s this week, we will restart that this soon. Sorry you won’t get random messages from me, but also congratulations to this week’s winners for the same reason.
Now onto some tournament results
Overall
Factions | Top 10 | Top 4 | Winners |
Custodes | 18 | 5 | 1 |
Tau Empire | 6 | 4 | 1 |
Tyranids | 3 | 2 | 2 |
Drukhari | 3 | 1 | 0 |
Adepta Sororitas | 2 | 1 | 0 |
Orks | 1 | 1 | 0 |
Chaos Marines | 1 | 1 | 0 |
Necrons | 1 | 1 | 0 |
Grey Knights | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Genestealer Cult | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Astra Militarum | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Deathwatch | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Iron Hands | 1 | 0 | 0 |
So, there’s definitely one faction dominating the rankings this week which is custodes who utterly dominated the top 10 from this weekend taking 18 out of 40 top 10 slots this week (that’s 45% of top 10 positions being one faction. T’au Empire also burst onto the seen going first and second at Beachhead Brawl over the weekend (the largest event of the weekend) and generally made their presence known in other events making it into 6 top 10 positions, 4 top 4 positions, and of course winning one event. Tyranids and Drukhari continue to make up the top-4 performing factions though for Drukhari it does appear they’ve lost a step, which will be interesting to watch moving forwards. Sisters of Battle also appear to be having a resurgence of sorts coming in at 5th and performing well overall (something I will talk about in just a moment). I’m curious to see as we get more data from the 2022 mission pack what the Faction versus Faction data looks like and I’m excited to share that data once it’s in good shape.
Event | Location | Pax | First | Second | Third | Fourth |
Beachhead Brawl | UK | 182 | Tau Sept | Tau Sept | Emp’s Chosen | Emp’s Chosen |
Norcal Open | US | 32 | Emp’s Chosen | Dal’yth Sept | Emp’s Chosen | Emperor’s Children |
36 Chambers | UK | 81 | Crusher | Emp’s Chosen | Bork’an Sept | RSR (BH/Strife/Prophets) |
West of Scotland | UK | 34 | Crusher | Speed Mob | C’tan and Friends | Sisters (Bloody Rose) |
It appears that we’ve also seen custodes settle into one sub-faction completely at the top with every top-4 custodes list choosing Emperor’s Chosen for their sub-faction. Crusher also continues to be the choice for Tyranids lists. For T’au we have 3 different sub-factions being chosen, so it’ll be interesting to see how that settles over the next few weeks. Finally, we have an RSR with Prophets now instead of Artisans so the doom must really be upon us (not really there’s some solid math looking at transhuman in place of ramshackle).
Faction | # Players | % Rep | Games | Win Rate |
Adeptus Custodes | 67 | 14.5% | 303 | 68.2% |
Tyranids | 23 | 5.0% | 120 | 62.5% |
T’au Empire | 34 | 7.3% | 171 | 61.7% |
Drukhari | 38 | 8.2% | 187 | 58.3% |
Adepta Sororitas | 17 | 3.7% | 81 | 55.6% |
Genestealer Cult | 20 | 4.3% | 114 | 54.8% |
We’re going to look at some more win rate data this week now that we have T’au Empire in the wild, so I pulled to the top 6 factions (mostly because I like GSC) to see where they slot in. Looking at just this last week’s data after eliminating the mirror we have T’au sitting at a 61.7% win rate which is exceptionally high and will be worth watching over the next few weeks as the numbers are still quite low. Their meta representation has also grown explosively from around 1% to 7.3% this week, which makes sense as everyone wants to dust off their battlesuits for a run with the new rules. Further, we have Custodes sitting at an eye-watering 68.2% win rate this week after the mirror (which is a drop from 74% the previous week, yes) and also have a 14% meta representation this last week, which makes the second most popular faction if you staple all the marine supplements together and put them in a trench coat. Drukhari are still the third most popular faction. Of interest to me though is that we have both Adepta Sorroritas and Genestealer Cult putting up solid win rates while also remaining somewhat uncommon factions. Both factions play the mission well and It’ll be interesting to see how these two do into the new CA 2022 meta that’s developing
Note: These numbers are still relatively small even when you combine weeks together, so I’ll report them as they change. However, custodes performance feels quite worrying to me right now.
Note Note: All these releases are great, but needing to buy and read all these books to keep up on rules is making Warhammer 40K invade my dreams.
TLDR
Lots of heavily oiled Golden Boys at the top of tournaments while the T’au Empire bursts onto the scene much like they did in 40K lore

Key Features
- T’au sept provides a nice flat buff with the ability to reroll a wound roll or a hit roll each time a unit attacks. The aura buff is also nice as it allows you to spread out your forces even further and apply pressure earlier without losing the benefits of your characters abilities.
- The ethereal is basically a chaplain equivalent and can provide either Sense of Stone (a 5+ feel no pain) or use Wisdom of the Guides to generate a CP. The warlord trait Exemplar of the Mont’ka lets the ethereal tag a unit to receive full wound rerolls, allowing that <core sept> unit to put out serious hurt during the shooting phase in place of their single reroll.
- Longstrike is a hammerhead with an extra pip of BS and the ability to select a <core> unit or Hammerhead to count as if they have a markerlight token when they make an attack. Tack on the warlord trait where Longstrike can pick a unit to receive auto-wounding on 6’s to hit and you’ve got a vehicle character who can deliver impressive ranged firepower and also boost nearby compatriots, especially those with high volumes of fire like those Crisis suits with Frag projectors.
- Finally, we have the Commander formerly known as One Punch Man because now he can punch multiple times with his Onager Gauntlet relic and thanks to the warlord trait Precision of the Hunter he gets to reroll all of his hit and wound rolls with that fist (just S12 AP4 D3). To cement his role as being an up-close brawler the Commander was given the prototype system flamer that gives D6+2 D2 flamer attacks alongside D6+2 additional attacks when he fights that are S4 AP D2. Basically, this commander took it personally when everyone made fun of T’au melee.
- Kroot provide an excellent source of screening for your valuable crisis suits (because really while the commander is good in melee the rest of the army… is not)
- You do have to get to melee though and 2 units of broadsides and 2 units of crisis suits can put out serious amounts of firepower. The sheer number of smart missile systems in particular provides you with solid ignore LOS shooting that also ignores the benefits of cover. People also tend to underestimate Airburst Fragmentation Projectors on the crisis suits which are D6 blast (though that does perhaps mean less when your unit has 10 of this weapon system) but they also ignore LOS and let you fire from safety.
- Broadsides provide very strong firebase units and as infantry can breach ruins and receive the benefit of cover to their save, getting them to a nice 1+ save in cover.
TLDR
- Strong firepower that ignores LOS, Strong line of sight firepower, and a strong Smash Comannder means there’s no place to hide

Key Features
- A crusher list? Now this I can explain since I’ve talked about various versions of it quite a bit. Your monsters are -1 damage, get a 5++ (so do your non monsters), and your monsters count as a number of models equal to their wound count.
- This list follows a fairly standard program with it’s big monsters being scythed hierodules in place of the dimachaerons we’ve seen previously. It’ll be interesting to see if these become more of a staple after points cost increases to the world’s largest harlequin, the dimachaeron. At T8 and a 3+ save, once you tack on the 5++ and the -1 damage these become impressively challenging to bring down. You also have to be careful charging them as they have an 18” flamer that hits 3D6 times at S6. Not that you necessarily want to charge them as they also have 6 S8 D3+3 attacks that will punch holes right through many combat characters and troops.
- Two harpies provide lots of mobile support and harassment, you really haven’t lived until somebody plays Breaking Through on a harpy and it kills a buffing character your opponent thought was safe because it was behind a line of troops. Also, never forget that these can be tagged as obsec and since they aren’t aircraft they can hold objectives and steal them from your opponent.
- Three units of tyranid warriors provide +1 to hit making all the gribblies more effective
- The one big difference for this list compared to others is the lack of swarm leader for chapter master rerolls. Likely this player is banking more on pressure and bio-weapon bond along with rerolls from talons to push through in place of full hit rerolls.
- The Swarmlord still magically slingshots what appeared to be a relatively slow monsters (but not really) right into your lines turn one
TLDR
- Big bugs with wings, Big bugs that spray acid, big bugs that steal your things
