After our intro to the narrative event last month I brought Kyle back on to discuss how the event went and his thoughts for the future.
1. So how did the story go! What was the epic conclusion of the narrative?
Story wise the planet was strip mined, robbed and looted of all the shiny orbs of power scattered around it. A final apocalyptic battle in the winding streets of the planets capital saw our heroes and villains scrambling to grab steal and evacuate with their loot.
2. In your opinion what was the best moment of the event (ie. Epic save roll, narrative moment, etc.)
That final mega battle on Sunday is always enjoyed by the vast majority of folks. Gives players a chance to really let loose with their favorite overpowered and super killy stuff on the table. May your purpose be to destroy those who fought against you and won or to avenge your fallen comrades, lords of war are plentiful on the final day.
3. Reflecting back on the day what things went better then you had hoped?
The thing that always goes well with the narrative is that the vast majority of issues are settled at the table. This event, not being competitive, players tend to act as they would with long time friends. Choosing to talk out issues and difficulties rather than flagging down a ref.
4. What things are you looking to improve on next year?
Well we have a new team taking over next year so I’m looking forward to playing myself this time around lol. But I’ve collected a lot of great information about the event from the players and even better suggestions of do’s and don’ts for the future. This will simply make the event even better next time around, evolving the experience with positive change for years to come.
5. Are there any ideas or hooks that you would recommend for other event organizers?
Engagement with your players is key. Learning names, talking with them as equals and hearing out the issues goes a very long way to investing in your players in any event. Letting the community have a say in how things should be run and even just hearing out new and exciting ideas can spark life into an event every time, preventing it from becoming stale.
6. Looking forward are there any narrative events you have circled on your calendar? What is the next thing you are looking forward to?
The next thing I’m looking forward too? Some new CSM rules lol (editor’s note: Preach brother!) But seriously, I don’t know. The only narrative event I look forward to is the SoCal Open And LVO ones. Those have been so amazing with the past organizers and FLG, I can’t wait to start prepping a narrative army for the next one of those.
Thanks Kyle! I am bummed I missed it but it sounds like it was a great event. I hope to have more of these interviews for various events going forward. I believe there are a lot of amazing narrative events out there that deserve to be shared and I am eager to learn from these pros how to improve my own events.
