Taking a look at the army placements at GT’s over the first weekend of February.
**Thought of the Day**
Big guns never tire.
Lists, data, and all stats are based on information pulled from either Best Coast Pairings, Down Under Pairings, or tabletop to. If you want to make sure your event is included in this weekly article series toss me an email at legiotitanicus at gmail dot com and I’ll make sure that I add it to my list for analysis during the week. I will also be reaching out to tournament organizers (TO’s) for event winner’s email addresses moving forward (or if you win at a GT level event let me know!).
Guest Writer: Nathan H.
This week we had 4 GT or larger events taking place according to BCP, DUP, and Tabletop TO (Qualifying events had at least 28 participants):
- Legion
- Cross Swords
- CaptainCon
- Dawn of War Beyond Odyssey
In today’s article we will be covering overall meta status and the following events:
Legion
You can find coverage of this week’s other tournaments in tomorrow’s article.
Note: There will be no player Q&A’s this week, we will restart that net week. Sorry you won’t get random messages from me, but also congratulations to this week’s winners for the same reason.
Overall
Factions | Top 10 | Top 4 | Winners |
Custodes | 10 | 6 | 3 |
Drukhari | 8 | 4 | 1 |
Tyranids | 5 | 2 | 0 |
Orks | 5 | 1 | 0 |
Daemons | 3 | 2 | 0 |
Grey Knights | 2 | 1 | 0 |
Adepta Sororitas | 2 | 0 | 0 |
Chaos Knights | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Genestealer Cult | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Guard | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Space Wolves | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Dark Angels | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Custodes lead the week in Top 10’s, Top 4’s, and overall event winners with 10, 6, and 3 respectively. Drukhari isn’t that far behind with 8, 4, and 1 in each of those categories. Then We have Tyranids and Orks rounding out the top four performing factions for the weekend with both factions performing similarly. More interesting is that this week we see a surge in Chaos Daemons based lists who went from barely making an impact to being the 5th highest performing faction at GT level events the previous week. It’ll be interesting to see if that continues especially as 2022 missions are taken up more with only half of the GT events this last weekend running the new mission pack while the other gave a last hurrah to the 2021 mission pack.
Event | Location | Pax | First | Second | Third | Fourth |
Legion | US | 38 | RSR (BH/AF/Strife) | Crusher | Emp’s Chosen | Belakor and Friends |
Cross Swords | UK | 30 | Emp’s Chosen | Thicc but also wracks | GK (Prescient) | Emp’s Chosen |
CaptainCon | US | 42 | Emp’s Chosen | Ork Speed Mob | Daemons (Kor and Keepers) | Crusher |
Odyssey | AU | 28 | Emp’s Chosen | RSR (BH/AF/Strife) | Thin City | Emp’s Chosen |
Looking at the list meta breakdown we’ve definitely seen the Emperor’s Golden Boys gel around a single shield host (at least in the top 4) with all of the Custodes list being Emperor’s Chosen based lists. This shield host gives you some extra flexibility and durability against mortal wounds that may be pushing it to the top. With Drukhari we’re probably seeing the last hurrah of some Thicc City lists due to the balance datasheet likely not being used at all events, but several have started to remove pain engines in favor of more wyches or are shuffling more towards hordes of wracks (Thin City). Finally, all the top 4 Tyranids lists are Crusher which comes as no surprise, but I do wonder if that will continue with Tau and also mission pack changes. Also, when you look at the matchup data Speed Mob punished Custodes players severely at CaptainCon, so it will be interesting to see if that’s more common for Orks list moving forwards.
However, I feel when people see this data that we will have a hard time not talking about the elephant in the room, the Adeptus Custodes.
Let’s talk custodes
Something of an interesting point to look at in the meta is the strong showing from custodes both at LVO and then this week at four GTs. THIS IS A SMALL DATA SET, so while I’m concerned about trends I’m seeing in this data, in particular that soon after their new book Custodes have taken 3 out of 4 GTs happening over a weekend, I don’t want to draw strong conclusions from it, yet. Below I’ve broken out a few statistics of interest from this weekend. This coming weekend there are two major-sized events, which will hopefully give us some clarity on the situation. Again, THIS IS A SMALL DATA SET the sky is not falling just yet.
Custodes were an extremely common faction at the four events this weekend with 7 of the 42 players at CaptainCon bringing custodes. They were the most common faction at one more event, tied for highest representation at another, and took second at Odyssey to Drukhari in terms of faction representation. However, you’re probably not reading this for participation numbers but for those sweet, sweet win rate statistics.
Faction | Total Games | Wins | Losses | Win % |
Tyranids | 44 | 28 | 16 | 63.6 |
Mirror Removed | 24 | 12 | 66.7
Drukhari | 73 | 48 | 31 | 60.8 |
Mirror Removed | 45 | 28 | 61.6
Custodes | 75 | 49 | 26 | 65.3 |
Mirror Removed | 49 | 17 | 74.2 |
To be fair to the Custodes I included Tyranids and Drukhari who are the two other highest-performing factions these last few weeks (well or months for Drukhari). Tyranids have a 66.7% win rate when you remove the mirror (that is Tyranids playing other Tyranids lists), Drukhari have a 61.6% win rate and Custodes have an eye-watering 74.2% win rate when you’ve removed the mirror. Now, again I will repeat THIS IS A SMALL DATASET for the third or fourth time, but with points reductions on key units taking effect after LVO Custodes are definitely a faction to watch as top-ranked players participate in majors these next few weeks. It’s also certainly a concern if these numbers continue at this rate as a 74.2% puts Custodes in the ball park of Iron Hands numbers in 8th edition.
Now onto our lists and winners from this week.

Key Features
- Drukhari goodstuff, but pre-2022 and balance dataslate changes.
- Real Space Raids give you a number of benefits, some of which have been removed in the balance dataslate (at least for pain engines). Primarily what you get is access to rerolls to hit for <core> units near your Archon but moving forwards this will not affect Talos/Cronos who have lost that keyword. However, there’s still something to be said for Grotesques getting easy access to hit rerolls without burning CP.
- Three beatstick characters come attached to this list with Drazhar who will kill most things even without full re-rolls from his warlord trait Hatred Eternal, an Archon with the Djin Blade and Ancient evil provides seven D3 attacks while also making enemy units fight last, then last but certainly not least we have the competitive edge/triptych whip succubus who is capable of mauling most infantry in the game by hitting and wound on 2’s then trying again with anything that doesn’t hit the damage step.
- Haemoxytes are an incredibly solid unit thanks to +1 to their invulnerable save (meaning they start at a 5++) and ignoring the first failed save each phase.
- Backing up all of this is an incredible number of flamer shots from cronos and twin-liqufier armed Talos. With 12D6 flamer shots from the Talos alone, and another 6D6 overchargeable flamer shots from the Cronos. Basically don’t get within 26” (that’s the total threat range of Cronos and Talos at range btw)
TLDR
- One last hurrah for pain engines good stuff

Key Features
- Emperor’s Chosen provides some excellent flexibility by letting you hot swap one unit in your command phase into another Shield Host by using a stratagem. It also lets you bypass one of the main weakness of custodes, which is mortal wounds by giving a 4+++ against mortal wounds in all phases. That means even ichor injector Talos each causing D3 mortals can just bounce off a custodes unit. Master craft rerolls also help immensely when you have MSU bike units each with one shot by letting reroll one hit or wound roll per unit.
- Trajann Valoris, don’t leave home without him as he’s amazing and basically should be in every Custodes list. He provides both wound and hit rerolls to <Core> units. Moment shackle lets him fight twice, change the damage of a failed save to 0, or interrupt for free once per battle. You also get a 6” heroic, full re-rolls to hit with a D3 axe and CP regeneration just in case you needed more reasons to take him. He’s also quite inexpensive at 160 points.
- Characters are rounded out with a Praetorian Plate equipped Allarus Terminator Captain who can exert heroic intervention across the board, auric exemplar gives him bonus attacks each time he kills a model (up to 4), impregnable mind gives him a deny and also lets him count as two additional models on an objective, and then Unstoppable Destroyer lets you pile-in and consolidate an additional inch in any direction so long as you end in engagement range. This provides you with a whole lot of shenanigans during the combat phase like heroic intervening to prevent your opponent from bringing all of his models to bear during a combat phase by being the closest model.
- A vexilla magnifica provides dense cover to your units and the castellan mark provides an incredibly useful redeploy for two units. Letting you deploy aggressively and to pull back if you don’t get the first turn.
- Finally 3 squads of 3 bikes give you a mobile firebase and then the Contemptor-Achillus provides a durable platform that also is quite good at killing other durable platforms via it’s D3+3 damage spear attacks (that it gets five of).
TLDR
- Emperor’s Chosen provides flexibility to a middle brawler type list that also has heroes that would make even the Emperor smile (but just a little)
