GW Grognard: What is going to win?

Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio here to give you my guess on what armies has the best chance of winning the Las Vegas Open 40K Champs this year.

If you are reading this then we are currently in the thick of the Las Vegas Open 40K Champs. Everyone is vying to come out on top by the end of the tournament. Okay maybe not everyone but I’m sure that by the end of the weekend everyone will be tired, regretting some decisions, and dreading having to return to the outside world, no matter how you in both in the tournament and in Las Vegas. As for the tournament, here are my three picks on which armies have a good shot and taking home the trophy.

Crusher Stampede

I think this is the first time in a long time where I actually had to buy a White Dwarf magazine. The Crusher Stampede is literally “crushing” (pun intended) the competition. There is a huge rise in the number of Tyranid players and we are seeing a lot of past Tyranid players coming back to their beloved bugs. Although the army seems to do well in almost anyone’s hands, in an environment like this one you are more likely to meet high end players as you get into the later rounds. That being said, I expect to see at least one in the top 8 on Sunday, if not 2.

Adeptus Custodes

Many players seem to be really taken with the new codex. I have seen some players still with the thought that the codex actually got worse but I don’t know why they think that. The new Kahtas(sp?) seem really strong and being able to shrug off mortal wounds half the time is pretty powerful if you start rolling hot. As a Thousand Sons player I get vexed when people make their 5+ Mortal Wound save. I can only imagine how I will feel when they start making more of those saves. In the end there are some top players taking Adeptus Custodes so that has to say something about the codex. Unfortunately it is a new codex so players may still need to get the hang of playing it so I will say only 1 player makes it into the top 8.

Drukhari

Through all these new codexes Drukhari still remains strong and continues to endure the pain of the competition from the other codexes. Luckily this book has a lot of tools that are still viable and gives players a lot of options. Whether it is the Thicc City build or the recent Thin City (a boatload of wracks) build, I think that the Drukhari is still the army to go through if you want to reach the top of the mountain. Even knowing what is coming may still not prepare you for when you actually face it. For this army I expect to see at least 2 players reach the top 8 and continue to threaten the top for a bit longer after the event as well.

That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed the article. Let me know what you think, and what you armies you think will be competing on Sunday, in the comments section below. Don’t forget to visit our Facebook, Twitch, and Patreon pages to stay up to date on what we’re up to and when episodes drop!
