This week we’ve got my favorite piece of this new article series, tournament winner Q&A so that we can get the inside scoop on some of the tech that I simply cannot provide. Moving forwards, I’ll try to include more players as I get more comfortable with the article series so don’t worry other podium members you won’t be forgotten!
**Thought for the Day**
Our enemies are mortal no longer. Face them squarely and without flinching from duty. Mercy for such as them is self-deception
Guest Writer: Nathan
Lists, data, and all stats are based on information pulled from either Best Coast Pairings, Down Under Pairings, or tabletop to. If you want to make sure your event is included in this weekly article series toss me an email at legiotitanicus@gmail.com and I’ll make sure that I add it to my list for analysis during the week. I will also be reaching out to tournament organizers (TO’s) for event winner’s email addresses moving forward (or if you win at a GT level event let me know!).
This week in 40K we had 7 GT or larger events take place according to BCP, DUP, and Tabletop TO (qualifying events had at least 30 participants):
- Fabricator’s Forge GT
- Twisted Warp
- Overwatch VI
- Oxford Open
- Challenger
- Ere We Go Again Ladz
- Cobrador and Friends
In the today’s article we will be covering overall meta status and the following events:
An honorable mention goes to the Ascension event in New Zealand for running a really interesting event that I couldn’t include in this analysis because it played at three different point levels over the course of the event. It also required you to not change your warlord, free relic or sub-faction. However, I love it anyways. Keep on keeping on with your tournaments.

Seems like after last week that our ever-hungry bug overlords are here to stay with them being piloted into the top 10 six times, top 4 four times, and taking the crown twice over the weekend. Drukhari continue to mount impressive tournament results being the best faction overall over the two weekends I’ve been tracking getting into the top 10 ten times, top 4 three times, and taking home first place in one event. Otherwise, what we’re seeing remains similar to last week’s article with the faction top 5 being rounded out Orks, Grey Knights, Custodes, and Adeptus Sororitas. I also think that Genestealer Cult are something to watch out for moving forwards with the one tournament that I could verify was using the new codex having Genestealer cult come out on top, so we may have more than just Tyranid dominance to look forward to and instead the whole Forces of the Hivemind umbrella. A bit rarer in the US we also have an Iron Hands list taking a GT win at the Ere We Go Again Ladz GT and a Space Wolves army taking a GT in Spain (though perhaps not surprising given the player).
Event | Location | Pax | First | Second | Third | Fourth |
Fabricators Forge | US | 30 | Twisted Helix (9th GSC) | Custodes | Thicc City | Goffs |
Overwatch VI | AU | 38 | Speed Freeks | Crusher | Chaos Knights | Adeptus Sororitas (VH/OML) |
Twisted Warp | UK | 72 | Drukhari (Thicc and Wyches) | Speed Freeks | Imperial Knights | Custodes |
Oxford Open | NZ | 44 | Crusher | Adeptus Sororitas (AS) | Chaos Marines (BL) | Admech (Mars) |
Challenger | Poland | 58 | Crusher | Grey Knights (Blades/Rapier) | Drukhari (OR Raiders) | Chaos Knights |
Ere We Go | US | 32 | Iron Hands (non-successor) | Chaos (Nurgle) | Freebooterz | Grey Knights (Rapiers/Prescient) |
Cobrador | ES | 34 | Space Wolves | Harlequins (Frozen Boats) | Chaos (Kor and Knights) | Leviathan |
Looking at the overall themes of the top four placing lists we see continued dominance of Crusher Stampede for top placing Tyranids lists with only one non-crusher Leviathan list taking 4th at Cobrador. Looking a little deeper we also see that Orks appear to have coalesced around Speed Freeks as the main list archetype with Goffs and Freebooterz based lists also placing highly over the weekend. Finally, there were some new Drukhari good stuff builds coming into play with a Thicc Wyches list that mixed coven and custom wych cult detachments taking first at Twisted Warp and harkening back to earlier this year a Drukhari raider spam list featuring Obsidian Rose.
With the announcement of pre-orders of the new GT pack and Munitorum Field Manual being announced by GW on Sunday I’d expect the meta to shake-up a little bit post Las Vegas Open (LVO) at the end of January. The current mission pack will of course be getting a proper sendoff over the next few weeks with multiple majors this weekend and then LVO to cap off the ITC season.
TLDR? Still, lots of stampeding bugs and angry Flesh Monsters, but now with Speedy Orks following along to keep things interesting.

Key Features
- Warbikers are already tough at T5 3W and -1 to hit, but with the Speed Freeks Army of Renown you’ve now got obsec bikes with an invulnerable save
- Deffkoptas provide mobile firepower (10D3 S8 D3 Blast? Yes please or no, depends on your perspective I suppose) that can take people by surprise, and can stick around thanks to ramshackle and the Evil Sunz Fire and Fade style stratagem (Drive by Dakka).
- Also, even with all that ranged firepower the list is quite dangerous at close quarters as well with a Warboss who rerolls anything that doesn’t go through to the damage step via Brutal But Kunnin’ and flat damage 3
- A warboss with Speed King also means that your Speed Freeks units can reroll wound rolls of 1, which once you’ve fired 80 missiles on average per turn or an inordinate amount of dakka gunz shots is quite nice
TLDR
- Speed Freeks provides lots of mobile firepower, obsec bikes, and stratagem support that lets you play To The Last safely while denying your opponent their most obvious secondary choice.
Andrew Sherman Q&A
- What is the general strategy behind your list?
So for my strategy in general, I have built the list to have To The Last (TTL) units that I can be aggressive with and to be able to pull them back to safety every turn. So I have built TTL into the list. Which are my Rukkatrukk and 2 units of koptas (I make 1 evil sun’s the other freebootas).
The Rukkatrukk just hide at the back of the table and indirect fire things. My evil sun’s one flies up, shoots then uses drive by dakka to move again and hide. My freebootas one move up, shoots, charges, maybe use the crashing through strat, then uses the ‘attack out of da sun’ stratagem to go into reserves at the end of my turn. (Most importantly, I can score my stranglehold points, then put then in reserves)
My second secondary 95% of the time is stranglehold. This army is so fast and has so much damage output it is really good for getting onto objectives and killing the enemy off theirs.
For my 3rd there is a couple of options. Da biggest boss can be ok depending on what you’re playing into, that’s why my war boss is built very killy.
The mission secondaries are not too bad either. Or you can go a killy one depending on what your opponent has and gives up. I find most armies don’t have many models left after 3 turns of this list shooting.
I also find a really good thing about this list is people almost always take bring it down, since it does give up 22 points for it. But since we can keep our koptas really safe while being TTL units and pulls in a nice points swing of me getting my TTL, while denying bring it down for my opponent.
- What was the most challenging matchup of the weekend and why?
As for my most challenging match up of the weekend 2 come to mind. Game 3 vs Chris Wrights (Author’s Note: That’s one of Australia’s top players) Drukhari. Then game 5 vs Hayden fords custodies. Game 3 against Chris’ thick city style list of 6 talos, and a bunch of wracks was quite a challenge to get through. It was an awesome game and Chris kept the pressure on, probably one of the best games I’ve ever had.
Then with game 5, the custodies have the neg 1 to hit banner. Which making this army neg 1 to hit really hurts as hit cuts your firepower in half. But I focus on my game plan, this game I took the surround them and strangle hold secondaries. Custodies don’t have many units/models. And I wanted to pressure my opponent between defending his home objectives and defending the middle. If he stops defending his home objectives, I’ll keep scoring surround them, if he turns around to defend them, then that’s easy stranglehold for me. So that Was my game plan this game. To try and force him to decide what he is going to defend. I was also able to use the speed of my list to just keep putting my units onto his objectives to deny him from raising his banners. So, this was my 2 most challenging match ups, but both were still really great games.
- What was your MVP unit for the event?
My MVP units of the tournament and is always the MVP every game is my units of koptas. With the anti-tank firepower, anti-infantry combat, the mortals from the crashing through strat on top of the ability to keep them safe after doing all their damage is so good. They just do so much work in the list.
- Is there anything or anyone you’d like to shout out?
I wanted to shout out the Down Under 40k podcast. I was on that the episode before this event to give a brief overview of my list. Then my team TNS Gaming. Always good to get those practice games in, and my art of war coach Matt Morosoli.

Key Features
– Crusher Stampede, so your monsters have a 5++ and -1 damage, alongside being in Leviathan meaning you’re getting brilliant stratagem, relic, and warlord trait support as well for your big gribblies
– Two units of warriors with warrior bond to pass out +1 to hit to your monsters, which is really nice with most monsters being at WS 3+-
– Swarmlord can send units flying across the table making your threat range basically whatever the light touches (screen dependent of course, or not if that was a dimachaeron with its ability to ignore models and terrain)
– Hive guard are always good especially with +1 to hit, exploding 6’s, and full chapter master style rerolls from Swarm Leader
– Dimachaeron or heirodules boosted by Thunderous Impact and Breaking through provide reliable damage capable of pulling down even Drukhari pain engines. Then Death Surge means that even in death your monsters will cause your opponent significant amounts of suffering. Oh, and the harpies probably also get some benefit from these things… wait what did I just type?
– Harpys? HARPYS? WHAT IS THIS? Speed kills, fight last in engagement range built into their datasheet, and mortal wounds bombing characters via Breaking Through
TLDR
– Crusher stampede, so big monsters counting as the number of models they have wounds left with a 5++ and -1 damage. Oh, and amazing stratagem support to make sure those monsters keep fighting or shooting or just generally making your opponent miserable.
John Mclachlan Q&A
- What is the general strategy behind your list?
I ran a prototype Crusher Stampede list with double Harpy, and without some of the main units people bring, like Flyrants, a Trygon Prime, Maleceptor, and no Lictors as I wanted to practise not having access to ROD.
General strategy is to use the Malanthrope and two redeploys for a defensive bubble on turn 1, making sure to protect the Hive Guard from charges if I don’t go first. There are a lot of conditional moves and options to take as I’m sure you understand, which vary wildly from game to game. I would then use the Swarmlord’s Hive Commander ability to throw a Dimachaeron forward to hit a key target and surf to tie up something, whilst running the Hierodule into the centre or onto an objective where it can sit and use the bio-acid spray as a defensive tool. Harpies would fan out across the board, snipe small MSU objective grabbers, and wait for the opportunity to charge a key character and use Breaking Through to deal usually 6 MW, and also to drop the occasional spore mine for move blocking shenanigans. Sometimes I’d use them for their fight last on charge ability to stop interrupts if, for example, my opponent went first, and I was able to get 4-5 charges off due to proximity.
General tricks are the double move, making a monster obsec, and I use model surfing a lot in combat, especially with Dimachaerons to eat important targets with the spine maw.
Combos are the standard ones, like buffing up Hive Guard and firing twice, stacking 4++ and 5+++ on a monster, etc. Even though I didn’t need to use it, I took the Void Crown on the Neurothrope so I had better access to Warpcraft secondaries if necessary, since I was avoiding ROD. In future iterations I would most likely drop it when I swap some units around, could drop a Harpy and the Neurothrope.
- What was the most challenging matchup of the weekend and why?
Most challenging matchup was the Drukhari list, with 6×10 wracks, 15 grotesques, 1 Cronos, 2 Talos, and 3×5 scourges with dark lances. He went first, which scared me because he moved everything up the table and the dark lances nearly killed the Hierodule (thanks crusher stampede for the resilience). I didn’t have a huge amount of anti-horde, but multi-damage really helped remove wracks, as well as the additional MW generation from Dimachaerons. Made sure to wipe all the scourges immediately with Harpy shots and some Hive Guard, then I made 6 charges and literally built a wall of flesh on the two side objectives (Battle Lines). Was tough to eventually chew through things and stop Hive Guard getting tagged, but it worked.
- What was your MVP unit for the event?
Hard to pick a unit, because most had hero moments, but my MVP unit was definitely the Hive Guard for purely damage output reasons. I want them nerfed to a max unit size of 3. Otherwise, special shout out to my favourite Harpy, who killed 3 intercessors, a librarian, 2 eradicators, a haemonculus, a terminator sorcerer all with flying headbutts, and then tanked some buffed up obliterators and tagged them in combat.
- Is there anything or anyone you’d like to shout out?
I suppose shout out to Alex for outscoring me at so many tournaments, there have been 2 in the past couple of months, and more before that where we don’t even play each other but he finishes 1st and I end up 2nd hahahaha

Key Features
- This is a little different than your standard Drukhari goodstuff list in that it combines Black Heart and Artisans of Flesh with a Custom Cult. The custom cult is built on precise killers and test of skill. Precise killers gives you boosted AP from Blade Arists on a 5+ instead of a 6 and then Test of Skill gives you reroll 1’s to wound against monsters and vehicles. Both of these might be good into either Thicc city or Crusher Stamped, which may or may not feature many monsters
- Artisans of Flesh provides durable coven support for objectives or in combat in the form of wracks, Talos, and Grotesque who all have -1 damage in addition to their FNPs
- Hellions provide an incredibly mobile troubleshooting unit
- You can’t talk about Drukhari without talking about hyper efficient and especially killy characters. This list has a succubus with the triptych whip and precision blows meaning that she has the potential to spike mortal wounds while wounding on 2’s into non-vehicles, Drazhar with full rerolls via Hatred Eternal, and an Ancient Evil Djinn blade Archon
- Also, there are some Mandrakes who end up doing all sorts of silly mandrake things
TLDR
- Drukhari Good Stuff, but this time with some fun extra spice in the form of a custom wych cult that’s tailored to deal with some of the bigger threats in the meta right now
Dom Maidlow Q&A
- What is the general strategy behind your list?
The general strategy of the list was to always take 2 secondaries where I didn’t really have to interact with the enemy to get points. Being a very brutal combat army in a lot of matchups I had, my opponent wasn’t keen on coming near me. Which is where the Drukhari secondary Herd The Prey is perfect. So, if I screen out deep strikers and sit about mid board hidden from guns. I can get 4 points a turn for denying my opponent being in two quarters of the table. If they want to stop the secondary then they have to commit a lot , over-extend and still be alive by the end of my next turn.
Retrieve Octarius Data was another secondary I was keen on as I could deep strike 1 unit of wracks and then use the mandrakes Fade Away ability to redeploy the following turn to get the harder two quarters. Again, I don’t need to fight my enemy to get this completed.
The game plan after this was to take an interactive secondary I could then just focus on, so I don’t have to think too much. It’s just jump on objectives hide and wait for the turns to strike and try and overwhelm my opponents in one go with a bunch of wounds and toughness in their face.
- What was the most challenging matchup of the weekend and why?
The most challenging match up was actually not Grey knights or the Double Speed Waaagh Orks lists I had to face …. it was the Space Wolves. Played by an amazing player called Clement. HIs list was a lot of lightning claws, fast moving units, double drop pod long fangs and annoying harassment units that I had to kill to stop easy engage.
The reason it was hard : lightning claws reroll wounds and have good ap , pair that with the exploding 6s to hit that they get. They can rip through my big troop squad, Talos and Grotesque units with easy! So, I had to sacrifice a few units to get them out in the open for my faster units to swoop in and pick them up. It was down to the wire that game and I only managed to win by 1 point!
- What was your MVP unit for the event?
It has to be the 5 man Grotesque unit; it just runs in and hammers a unit even in some matchups with the -1 damage. The weight of attacks with the reroll stratagem was just the perfect combo of destruction!
Bonus for you, what was the LVP – Least valuable player (unit), the Ravager! Did almost nothing the entire tournie when I could have used points for some reaver jet bikes to move block and be annoying. So yes, not keeping a Ravager going forward.
- Is there anything or anyone you’d like to shout out?
Please go follow me on Instagram Darktechnodom and the Realspace Raiders podcast to hear more about the event and anything Drukhari!

Key Features
- Iron hands provides rerolls for heavy weapons while you’re in devastator doctrine (important for your non-core vehicles). The Feel No Pain also provides a nice additional layer of durability on everything, which when you tack on a tech marine means your vehicles will last a lot longer than they should
- Librarian provides CP regen from the tempered helm, which means you can fuel important stratagems throughout the game. Then both Might of Heroes and Psychic Fortress buff vehicles even further especially that Land Raider Achilles which can be taken to a fun-loving T9 by Might of Heroes. Your redemptory dreads will also love having a 5++ placed on them
- Merciless Logic giving exploding 6’s to a vulkite contemptor dreadnought who has character protection will pick up opposing units in their bunches, especially if those units are susceptible to D2 attacks
- The primaris techmarine provides -1 damage to a nearby vehicle, heals vehicles, and provides boosts to hit. The Target protocols warlord trait also means you can give more rerolls to more units What’s not to love?
- The Land Raider Achilles, 8 melta shots, a quad launcher that can shoot either 4 D3 direct fire shots or 4D3 S4 D1 shots that ignore LOS shots, and a native 5++. Tack on some buffs from the librarian and you’ve got an immovable object that dishes out substantial firepower
- Oh, and don’t sleep on the Chapter Master making your units have obsec when they shouldn’t have obsec
TLDR
- Iron Hands and Vehicles what better combination of things exists?

That’s half of your coverage for the week. Tomorrow we will go over lists for an event in Poland (Hint: If you ever look at who is the winningest team in WTC history it’s the Polish national team, so maybe a meta to keep an eye on?). We will also be covering Fabricators Forge where we’re seeing the first new GSC book tournament results, and then we will head over to Spain for the Cobrador and Friends event where the Space Wolves wrote themselves a saga and a GT win.
