**Thought of the Day**
“A hundred thousand worlds, ten hundred thousand wars. There is no respite, there is nowhere to hide. Across the galaxy there is only war”
GUEST ARTICLE WRITER: NATHAN
Hello Everyone, my name is Nathan, and this is your friendly new neighborhood weekly tournament results and coverage article called ‘Thought for the day’. Just to get introductions out of the way, I’m a relatively new player who started right at the tail-end of 8th edition right before the pandemic changed a lot of how, where, and when we played 40K for a bit. I like to think of myself as a competitive player instead of a narrative or casual player (though I do enjoy a good crusade campaign now and again). I play basically everything under the Aeldari umbrella including Asuryani, Drukhari, and Harlequins. This article series will contain the following information:
- A look at data from that week’s Grand Tournament (GT) and higher results, including a look at some of the trends and booming factions
- Top 4 List Analysis and then I’ll also pull some interesting lists out of Best coast Pairings and Down Under Pairings (BCP/DUP) to take a look at
Moving forward we will also have:
- A Q&A with a random selection of tournament winners, so we can get insights into strategy and tactics from the actual players
- A monthly look at the state of the meta
- Stories of my own experience at tournaments (COVID dependent)
Lists, data, and all stats are based on information pulled from either Best Coast Pairings or Down Under Pairings. If you want to make sure your event is included in this weekly article series toss me an email at… and I’ll make sure that I add it to my list for analysis during the week. I will also be reaching out to tournament organizers (TO) for event winner’s email addresses moving forward (or if you win at a GT level event let me know!).
This week in 40K we had 9 GT or larger events take place according to BCP and DUP (qualifying events had at least 30 participants):
TOMORROW’S ROUND UP
- Tables and Towers January GT
- New Years Knockout GT 2022
- Game Grid hosts the Warhound GT
- Exterminatus IV: Wagga Wagga 40k Tournament
- Da Bolton Waaagh

Looking briefly at the data what we can see is that we’ve got a surge in Tyranids placing in the top 10 and top 4 at tournaments, with both Tyranids and Drukhari finishing with sizeable leads over other high-performing factions (Custodes, Death Guard, Grey Knights) from this week’s events (Drukhari continue dominance? What a strange world). Tyranids are quite solidly at the top with 14 top 10 and 10 top 4 finishes this week. Drukhari trailed them with 11 and 5, respectively. Followed by Death Guard, Sisters of Battle, Custodes, and Grey Knights wrapping up the highest performers this week. It’s good to note though, that despite not having many top 10 finishes Thousand Sons as a faction tied with Tyranids and Drukhari with 2 overall wins at GT sized events this week.

Looking a little deeper at list construction for Tyranids lists that placed within the Top 10 of events this week they are basically exclusively leveraging the new Army of Renown the Crusher Stampede. In fact, all of the top 4 lists featured the Army of Renown. Also, I’m not going to be analyzing RTT level events, a cursory examination of that data reveals that Crusher Stampede appears to have swept almost all RTT events from this week alongside their strong performance at the GT level.
The core of these Tyranid crusher stampede lists appears to be similar across multiple events. Most lists consist of a Leviathan battalion made up of – one hive tyrant, 3 squads of 3 tyranid warriors, lictors, and one squad of hive guard. After that core we see these lists vary in their HQ units – Swarm Lord and Malanthropes being common, but not universal – and we also see variety in the large monsters taken. Most lists take dimachaerons or heirodules (both the scythed and barbed variants), but with a few lists also takie flyers including the harpy and the Harridan.
It’s worth noting that some of the stampede lists will likely change with what we know about the new GT pack. Especially with changes to ROD (now RND) lictors and single monsters will have a hard time succeeding at these actions. It’ll be interesting to see how these lists adapt to those changes. Personally, I suspect some of those 3-man warrior blobs might get a little larger or alternatively we will see units of raveners come into play more moving forwards.
TLDR? Bugs, bugs, bugs, and more bugs. Mostly monstrous. Also, apparently all of your monster’s getting an invulnerable save, -1 damage, and solid stratagem support is good? Who knew?

Key Features
- Big monsters are -1 damage and count as their remaining wounds worth of models for holding objectives; all of your models (including monsters) have a 5++.
- Hive Tyrant that can go character hunting with flat 3 damage, 5+D3 extra attacks that ignore invulnerable saves. Also a clutch redeploy to let you deploy on the line and then redeploy more conservatively if you don’t get first turn
- Two units of warriors with warrior bond to pass out +1 to hit to your monsters, which is really nice with most monsters being at WS 3+
- Maleceptor can provide clutch defense via ENCEPHALIC DIFFUSION which subtracts 1 strength from ranged attacks against units within 6” of the Maleceptor
- Lictors provide an easy source of ROD and Engage
- Dimachaeron or heirodules boosted by Thunderous Impact and Breaking through provide reliable damage capable of pulling down even Drukhari pain engines. Then Death Surge means that even in death your monsters will cause your opponent significant amounts of suffering.
- Adaptive neural lobe provides much needed CP regeneration support (get a CP back on a 5+) so that you can continue to afford more expensive stratagems like encephalic diffusion.
TLDR
- Big durable monsters with support units that increase durability and efficiency into the stratosphere

Key Features
- The Realspace Raid means your Archon provides much needed reroll support to your coven creatures without requiring the use of stratagems like ‘Prey on the Weak’
- Characters provide impressive support from the Archon causing fight last (via Ancient Evil), the Succubus with Competitive Edge and the Triptych whip still provides one of the best anti-infantry tools in the game, and the Haemonculus provides healing to keep already durable monsters in the game.
- The animus vitae can provide some tricksy ‘Power from Pain’ manipulation to get your coven creatures into enemy lines even earlier
- Arists of Flesh bringing -1 damage on count them 15 grotesques and 9 Talos creating an incredibly durable and punchy core for the army
- Ichor injectors and Talos Gauntlets mean that Talos will punch up (well, and down) consistently
- Where did my cronos go and Drazhar? A shift away from Drazhar lead Dark Technomancer patrols
TLDR
- A thiccc city variant that to brings durable monsters that are surprisingly fast, and very punchy

Key Features
- Cult of duplicity provides a redeploy stratagem so you can take advantage of an opponents deployment mistake (or if you’re me correct your own deployment mistake) or move units into strategic reserves
- Characters provide you with some very important buffs and utility in this list. The infernal master provides a means to ignore all modifiers via the Orrery relic, their powers provide force multipliers (Maelstrom adds +1 S, Glimpse provides a pocket reroll, and then Empyric boosts range). Meanwhile the sorcerer bumps durability via glamour and weaver of fates.
- Cult of Time provides the anvil for this list via a large brick of scarab occult terminators who are completely decked out with heavy weapons. Cult of time provides two means of bringing these terminators back (psychic flux and warped regeneration). Don’t discount being able to bring models back closer to an opponent after redeploying with something like the umbrafilic crystal meaning you can head into combat much easier.
- The characters of this detachment also provide the spice with the exalted sorcerer providing a steady stream of reliable mortal wound output and teleportation (umbrafilic crystal). Mortal wound reliability thanks to the athenaean scroll and then the ability to cast even more powers via immaterial echo means you can constantly churn psychic powers to bring back models in your terminator brick. The second sorcerer can provide blessings from safety by using the prism of echoes relic as well.
- At its core you also have cultists and chaos spawn to assist with board control, screening, and action monkeys.
TLDR
- Duplicity shenanigans, and Time durability combine to create a mortal wound battery and terminators that just won’t die

Key Features
- I’m a huge sucker for Aeldari lists, which is part (well most) of why I chose this list to be my first list of the week.
- For the spearhead a warlock skyrunner conclave and farseer conclave mean you can leverage both seer council and concordance of power to make psychic powers easier to cast (+1 from seer council) and for your warlocks it means the range on their powers doubles meaning they can reach out and touch targets while keeping their delicate bodies safe next to an artillery piece
- Swooping hawks are very reliable action monkeys, especially for ROD, and with their redeploy and native deep strike they can move around the battlefield at will
- Masterful shots and Expert Crafters boosts the efficiency of the Crafworld Eldar Artillery substantially especially when it’s leveraged with high-damage low volume shots (war walkers) or with MSU (Dark Reapers) or with improving your artillery firing away from behind buildings (Weavers, Night Spinners). It’s also good to never look past that Masterful shots mean you ignore the benefits of cover, including things like dense. Making your artillery even more efficient. Also, don’t sleep on Dark Reapers with the tempest launcher and fast shot, they provide ample firepower that ignores LOS and lets your reapers continue providing fire support even if you can’t use Fire and Fade to get them to safety.
- Harlequins provide speed to the list, 3 starweavers in soaring spite full of fusion pistols and close combat weapons means you can move 22” and still fire fusion pistols with no penalty. When the troupes fall out they still provide a decent melee unit and their 4++ means they can be surprisingly durable
- A skystrider twilight fang troupe master also provides an impressively mobile character assassin or blender, especially if he’s around late in the game
- Finally a solitaire which is something I haven’t seen in a competitive list during 9th edition, don’t sleep on it’s ability to murder infantry, especially with the rose relic that makes it flat 3 damage instead of DD3
TLDR
- Artillery and redeploying action monkeys supported by a rapid response harlequins force that can punch in combat and shoot hard targets

Key Features
- Two terminator bricks in cult of time are surely even better than one, right? Similar to the previous list I described you’ve got fully equipped terminator units in cult of time detachments with sorcerers who can bring fallen terminators back to the fight while also boosting both their survivability and firepower via psychic powers.
- Rubricae take on the role of cultists and chaos spawn in the previous lists providing action monkeys, tool kit units, and also durable screens for characters or your terminators
- Ahriman provides an extra layer of insulation with extra casts and a boost to casting and cabal points that means you can leverage more mortal wound output and force multiplication
- Second change from the previous list is the inclusion of a daemon prince who can provide a reliable close combat threat, especially when boosted by the power swelled by the warp and aetherstride, alongside the teleportation of the umbrafilic crystal that can shoot either the prince or an allied unit around the map.
- Doombolt on several psykers also provides a reliable mortal wound output that can be further boosted using cabal points you’ll have plenty of
TLDR
- Twice the undying terminators in a cult of time list means you can grind your opponent down with mortal wounds and inferno bolter shells
